You can get the site up but if you try to post you get that infuriating, smug "Oops, I just forgot [sic] how to use auxiliary verbs" message. So it looks like a glitch rather than anyone pulling the plug. In the US, am getting a message that the domain name has lapsed. Since today is the DN registration date for that site, I figured the annual DN payment was not made. Well, I hope this isn't something where US regs are pissier. And I know the experience of starting threads that don't take off. A contentious element does seem needed. Then again, it isn't needed, Tyndall faked his results, the ice age is about to start and you are all clearly insane!
TheVat Posted Friday at 02:28 AM Posted Friday at 02:28 AM I'm getting (for the SFC website): "Services for this domain name have been disabled." Whois data shows it's an anonymous registrant using a DN registrar called Namecheap. Which I had heard was kind of a magnet for sketchy and scammy websites, in a New York Times expose. When I saw the address given was Reykjavik, I knew it was the same one I'd heard about. So I found a link... https://grapevine.is/news/2024/10/10/iceland-harbouring-the-webs-sketchiest-sites-nyt-report/ "Some of the internet’s “sketchiest websites” are registered at an Iceland address, the New York Times report in an extensive investigation. Published on October 9, NYT reporters revealed that sites dealing in identity theft, the spread of disinformation, and ransomware have found a safe home in Iceland through the internet privacy service Withheld for Privacy (WFP). Sharing an address with the Penis Museum and H&M at Kalkofnsvegur 2 in downtown Reykjavík, WFP specialises in protecting internet privacy for its clients. The company is a subsidiary of the Arizona-based domain registrar Namecheap. NYT reporters claim that the company has made Iceland an international centre for illegal activity...." No, you read that correctly: WFP shares an address with the Penis Museum of Reykjavik. (at this point, I'm fairly fascinated. TBC tomorrow...)(though the jokes may begin at any time)

Does Trump want to acquire the Domain now that he knows Greenland is not ICEland? Incidentally I have the old(2 years defunct) thescienceforum. DOT com site still bookmarked on my phone and I clicked on it today to see how it was doing and I got refreshed to a page (twice as I double checked) which was the login page for my mobile data provider (vodafone). I wondered was it trying to hack my (anybody's ) information in some clever scheme. The owner of that site was a crook I am fairly certain and the porn on it after it "folded" seemed clearly illegal to me.

Perhaps my ability to see the site was just a cached screen my end (is that possible?) rather than a connection to the actual site. But I think the domain once lapsed even here, due an oversight on the part of whoever had to pay the subscription. So it may be up again in a few days. On thread content issue, yes something contentious seems to be the key. That's my argument for tolerating a few cranks and nutters, provided they are civil and to some degree responsive to the reactions they receive. Incidentally, my impression on the other place is that recently moderation policy has changed, to be more tolerant, presumably in the hope of retaining more visitors.

No,on the other forum **discussing this someone (CC) said they can access the site but it is like a ghost town with the odd visitor who don't do anything (CC started an outage post which is still there without other contributions) and that is all there is -but CC can see it. ** scivillage

I can see it but if I try to post a reply I get the "Oops" message and it dies.
TheVat Posted Friday at 04:11 PM Posted Friday at 04:11 PM So the website whose registrant address is the Phallological Museum is....back up. 6 hours ago, exchemist said: Perhaps my ability to see the site was just a cached screen my end (is that possible?) Yes. Many browsers, if your settings are set to indefinite cache accumulation, will open the last view of a homepage or visited page within, including an oops page. (I clear my cache every 24 hours, which is why I got the down message)

Used to be Science related topics with the odd Political topic. I long for the 'good old days' when a science discussion would go on for many pages. Have 'our' interests changed drastically, or are we encouraging people who get tossed from other forums to come post their unwanted topics here ? I find myself posting less and less, as a lot of the topics don't interest me, and I don't think ( opinion ) they belong in a science forum. And I've noticed a lot of the more senior members doing the same. have others noted this trend ? Going back to OP and reflecting on I use the forum, I noticed that my motivation is largely to look for perspectives of folks who I never met but had many interesting conversations with (OP is such an example). I actually think because I am surrounded by scientists in my job, I gravitate a bit more to things that I would rather discuss with friends rather than colleagues. I am not sure how true that might for others, though.
Imagine Everything Posted 18 hours ago Posted 18 hours ago (edited) Hope you don't end up shutting this down. It's been really interesting, mind boggling but interesting, fascinating in fact being here. I know a lot more now than I ever would have perhaps, if one of you hadn't said yes to me posting here initially. If I may, from a non scientists/mathematicians point of view, for me even knowing the little I do, seeing an equation, all the different symbols or the way you all speak about things can be quite daunting at times. I have no idea how you might combat this other than being as helpful as you have been. Thank you anyway, just thought I should say something, I appreciate your help.
