nec209 Posted October 19 Posted October 19 “Study finds standing desks may be bad for your health Every 30 minutes spent standing beyond two hours increases the risk of circulatory disease by 11% We've long been told that sitting at a desk all day is the new smoking, resulting in a higher risk of dangerous health conditions. It's why companies such as Google offer employees the option to use standing desks. However, according to a new study, standing all day may not be as good for us as we think, and could even increase the risk of conditions such as swollen veins and blood clots in the legs.” https://www.techspot.com/news/105176-study-finds-standing-desks-may-bad-health-increasing.html
swansont Posted October 19 Posted October 19 “Every 30 minutes spent standing beyond two hours increases the risk of circulatory disease by 11%” emphasis added.. That seems important. It suggests that it’s movement vs being sedentary/stationary (I also add quotation marks to the OP)
nec209 Posted October 19 Author Posted October 19 So the study looks like you can stand as long you not standing for more than two hours. That if you are standing for more than two hours it is bad for your health. So as long you standing no more than two hours than standing desk are probably better than sitting for hours.
TheVat Posted October 19 Posted October 19 Also depends on the kind of standing. If you aren't standing at parade rest (the formal military position, quite motionless), then you can flex the calves occasionally and keep blood from pooling. I recall a standing job where I'd rise up on tiptoes - flexing the soleus and gastrocnemius periodically. It reduced fatigue and made it much more comfortable to keep standing.
