I've also heard Trump say that Mexico should become a US state. Maybe Claudia Sheinbaum should take him up on that offer. Then Trump would have to open the border with Mexico and allow Mexicans free reign of the US. Wouldn't THAT piss off his MAGA supporters?

Mexico was not considered, their skin color has the wrong shade. Canada would likely just become feral and with plans to burn down the White House again.

Pretty funny, the Canadian home crowd booed the US national anthem before the US/Canada hockey game. Guess they just don't understand that Big Brother is going give them what they want, even if they don't want it.

Depends on whether the entire country as a whole became a state or if individual provinces each became states, but it’s moot bc it won’t happen. It’s all trolling to distract us from the more heinous shit they’re doing.

Partly right but not the whole story in my view.

Classic Trump behaviour includes floating outrageous ideas and letting them lie for bit, while the Overton window is shifted by his tame news media and political outriders, and then returning to them later with more seriousness. This Canada one may indeed go nowhere, but I think it would be a mistake to count on it being merely a distraction technique.

Even if Canada was annexed as one state, and given the same representation as othe states in the House, Senate and Electoral College, the Republicans would never get elected again.

I wished that was true, but in my gut I feel that we have gone down a road that is not only difficult to reverse, but it is also no longer linked to just one person anymore. I think of it more like digitally distributed cult, which is way worse.

I think my perspective is a bit different from yours and the author's. I am less worried about decisions and quality of individual politicians (which, I must add, is certainly worrisome in itself), but I focus more on the overall system and the population.

I think one assumption that quite a few moderate politicians have is that once the folks like Trump and Musk are gone there will be reckoning and subsequent to a status quo before they came into power. A kind of of normalcy, if you will. However, I do think we are in a new normal situation. I have ranted on modern information systems quite a bit a few times, so I will spare you that, but I will say that the current system and the prevalent misinformation is fuel for especially radical right wing ideologies which have gained tremendous power over the last decade. I.e., I think it goes way beyond Trump his cronies and a bunch of scared, self-serving sycophants. First, we will have folks that support it out of fear, then, we will have folks do the same thing, but with conviction.

Some of these elements we have seen played out with the tea party, and I think the trend has accelerated (and again, is broader than just the North American continent).

If we do not deal with it on a systemic level, I fear that there will be no reversal of these agenas.

I wouldn't hold my breath waiting to get to vote if it happened. Would even current Americans get an honest election to vote in if the currently attempted trajectory gets enough footing?

If Trump/MAGA/extreme right is stopped, it has to come from them, from the right, and maybe slightly left of centre. Further left will just add fuel for those trying to establish a coup from within.

Yep.  That's why the focus on Trump as a Russian mole (rekindled today, I see, by a former KGB officer*) or a cult figure with some special charisma or just personifying a social pendulum swing on some hot button issue....is becoming a set of distractions from what you are noticing: the wider systemic problems for representative democracy.
