Generative AI could lead to fully AGI

I believe that generative AI could eventually lead to fully self-developing agi, any thoughts?

I think there is an awful lot of hype and hot air around the whole subject. One day maybe but at present, whilst machine learning focused on specific applications clearly has vast potential,  a lot of generative AI seems to be crap. So much so that any self-developing AI would produce a sort of village idiot.

Because, we won't be able to understand it and a true AGI will understand us all too well, it will have all the tools to be the ultimate demagogue. It will be constantly on the hunt for any potential threat to itself, and manipulate us in such a way that we would rather die, than see its demise.
