Fellowes Posted October 6, 2005 Posted October 6, 2005 I haven't posted anyhting on here in a long time, but I am getting to the point where I have to seriously start thinking about my career. I am interested in the animal sciences andmaybe some psychiatry. I also very much enjoy writing. I was just wondering how some other people stumbled upon their jobs and whether or not they are where they wish to be at the moment. What would be the best way to deciding on what to do? Thanks Fellowes
-Demosthenes- Posted October 6, 2005 Posted October 6, 2005 Are you going to college? If you do then you can take a bunch of different classes, decide what you like, and change you're major around a few times. Sounds like a good plan eh?
j_p Posted October 6, 2005 Posted October 6, 2005 I definitely stumbled into my career; I decide to get my science requirements out of the way; then I decided to take a few chemistry courses to round out a biology degree; then I decided to go for the double major because it was only two more courses [that was Inorganic and P-Chem]; finally, on my third job I realized I was a chemist and not a biologist. I am interested in the animal sciences andmaybe some psychiatry. I also very much enjoy writing. So' date=' you will take undergraduate courses for six years, eventually get kicked out of school with a multidisplinary degree and your advisor's sigh of relief. Within three years you will be a millionaire best selling author of 'pet-help' books, one of which will be made into a quirky and critically acclaimed independent film. [Don't let Affleck have the lead; go for the little girl from 'Winn-Dixie'.'] Then, after a period of self-destructive behavior [in your case probably not substance-abuse; you'll probably start a wild-life research project in Peru], you will get your life back on track. I suspect you will host a radio call-in program about animals on 'NPR that will be wildly sucessful, and eventually very lucrative. [How the host of an NPR program becomes rich is beyond even my imagination.]
Fellowes Posted October 7, 2005 Author Posted October 7, 2005 I should edit that, but i will say it here, I like animal sciences, and human psychiatry, im not crazy
In My Memory Posted October 7, 2005 Posted October 7, 2005 I stumbled into my career like this: The first classes I started to take were courses in philosophy, but I ran out of money to pay for books and classes. I realized that I couldnt get a job without practical experience, I had to learn how to buy only second-hand essentials from thrift stores and garage sells. One day when browsing through a garage sell, I found a book on the basics of investing and microeconomics and decided that I had no better way to make money. My first stock purchase was US$30, which I turned in US$35 (after comission), and I felt so proud of myself Then I realized I was an investor.
Katana Posted October 24, 2005 Posted October 24, 2005 My situation is highly draining. It's my head versus my heart. MY head's into genetics and my heart: acting...For now i got a job at a hospital not far from where i live. What you wish to do with your life is hard or confusing at times but all i can say is when you have made the correct decisions...you'll know.
Bio-Hazard Posted October 24, 2005 Posted October 24, 2005 I want to be my own god, so I chose biochem and neuroscience. It's not about the money, it's not about the status. It's about the knowledge and the power that comes with it. Both pay very well, though. Don't worry about running out of money, we've got the Internet and libraries these days. Colleges with computers and free internet access, all you gotta do is get to the computer. Knowledge is free these days, yet the trouble is finding it. What I would do if I were you is I would research animal psychiatry, genetics, and cognitive science. By doing that you help science look into the mind of animals and you also get to do both fields. I think a good example of this is betty the crow. I dislike bring the same topic up over and over, but if it works, hey. People spend long amounts of time trying to figure out what to do. I stumbled back and forth and as a child wanted to do computer science. However that got booted out of America into India so I stopped. That was an economic change. Luckily that pushed me into neuroscience and a lot of other things of interest which I decided to go with. I was interested in technology, sci-fi, and cyborgs as a child.. also genetics and dragons.. I thought if we had dragons with certain acidic compounds in their body, there may have been electromagnetic waves in earlier days that allowed them to form wings, and this acid could have also started fires when spit onto houses.. Experience, trial and error, all those things will help one decide.. Try to do it quickly though, you ain't got much time. Meditate on it with free time.
AzurePhoenix Posted October 24, 2005 Posted October 24, 2005 I'm going into zoology because it's always been what I wanted to do from a very yong age, and it's what i know best. Couldn't handle a job analyzing petri dishes and slides, no matter how fun such things are for me periodically. I need activity.
X-Y Posted October 24, 2005 Posted October 24, 2005 Hi, I am exactly in the same position, my Degree in Science starts in January2006and in the last year of the degree I have to make my mind up which area I want to specialise out of 5 options, good thing is I have got 2 years until I have to make such decision, but it is proving hard already.
