Unreal08 Posted October 23, 2005 Posted October 23, 2005 i have a porblem with my tesla coil. i need to know wut size wire and how many wraps i need if im using 5kv NST. right now currently i have 5 wraps of 10 awg wire. the secondary coil is 1 1/2 in in diameter and 5 in tall would u plz help me out. i think i need smaller wire
Lance Posted October 23, 2005 Posted October 23, 2005 Your secondary is way too short assuming your NST is a 25-30ma model. Download TeslaMap
Unreal08 Posted October 23, 2005 Author Posted October 23, 2005 yes it is 30mA and i have changed the wire to smaller and i have about 7-8 wraps now
sungmintd8 Posted October 23, 2005 Posted October 23, 2005 I would use 20 guage. My secondary is 3 1/2 foot high and a 3 inch diameter. It uses around 1000 wraps. In your case I would wrap it 20-30 times, until about an inch above the top, or 1/2.
Unreal08 Posted October 23, 2005 Author Posted October 23, 2005 i would also like to know if it is better if the primary is flat or in a cone shape
Unreal08 Posted October 23, 2005 Author Posted October 23, 2005 my secondary is 5 in high and 1.5 in in diameter also
sungmintd8 Posted October 25, 2005 Posted October 25, 2005 I'd use a double wind of 6 guage, uncovered, or something around 5 winds of about 10 guage. I think the valley/cone type is more efficient, but it is much harder on a bigger tesla coil. I use a flat for my 3 foot. 10 guage is easier to manipulate also, so five winds in a valley type.
