CuriousMan Posted October 30, 2005 Posted October 30, 2005 When a conductor moves in a magnetic field that is between the two poles- north and south, the Electro Motive Force is developed and current starts to flow in the conductor. (When the conductor moves in a magnetic field at the right angle to the magnetic lines the current in the coductor has its maximum value) Why the current starts to flow? This is my opinion. When the conductor moves in the magnet field there will be a circular magnet field developed around the conductor because of the movement through the magnetic lines. The faster the conductor moves the more circular the magnetic field will be formed around it. I think that it is the circular magnetic field around the conductor that causes current to flow. When current starts to flow it will creat a magnetic field around the conductor that will be of the same direction with the first one that has been created because of the movement. This circular magnetic field will grow as both the speed and current grow. Then when the conductor starts to move too fast there will be a difference in the magnetic field's srengths between the forward and the rear sides of the conductor that starts to interact with the magnetic field of the magnets causing the conductor to slow down or in another words causes the magnetic Force that will act in the opposite direction to the the movement. Now lets say that that the coductor does not move but is connected to a DC voltage instead (electric motor). DC current starts to flow in it that will create the circular electromagnetic field around the conductor. This M field will interact with the magnetic lines in such a way that there will be difference in the magnetic strenths in the forward and rear sides of the conductor that will cause the conductor to move in the direction of the lower magnetic force. When the conductor starts to move in the magnetic field there will be the circular M field created around the conductor that in turn will create current and THIS CURRENT WILL BE OF OPOSITE DIRECTION to the current we got from connecting the conductor to the DC source. So, on my opinion it is the circular EM field that causes current to flow in the conductor and... DC generator on my opinion is an electro-mechanical devise that was designed for very this purpose-creat the circular magnetic field that causes EMF and current. I am not a scientist I just study and english language is not my native one so maybe you will have some difficulties in understanding the point. Any way I just wanted to know if my thoughts were correct or not and I wanted to share them with you guys who surely have more knowledge than I do. thanks

Please draw a drawing: The upper side of the paper will be a the North pole, the lower part of it will be the South. Draw the magnetic lines in the direction from the North to the South. Between the poles draw the conductor in the form of a circle that is the cross section of the conductor. Now lets assume that the conductor moves from left to right. Draw an arrow in the direction of the movement,it will be the movement's axes. The magnetic line is the magnetic axes that is in the direction from the up to the down. If the conductor moves in the direction as we have draw the drawing, there will be EMF or I would say electrostatic field that will be as follows: electrons that have a negative charge will be moved closer to you and the positive particles away from you. From this can be seen very interesting thing. The relationships between the three- MOVEMENT,ELECTROSTATIC FIELD and MAGNETIC FIELD. All of the them have a 90 fase shift between each other. If you draw three axes - x,y and Z where the Z is magnetic line, X- electrostatic field line and Y - movement line you would see that all the three are perpendicular to each other. I would call this a left-hand-rule for the relationships between movement,electrostatic field and the magnetic field. If you take the conductor with your left hand so that your fingers are in the direction of the movement and the big finger is pointid to you indicating the direction of the static filed then your palm will be in the direction of the magnetic line. As I said in my previous post when a conductor moves in the magnetic field a circular magnet field is created around the conductor as a result of the movement and from what I have just said that the magnetic,electrostatic and movement always are perpendicular to each other I can say the following: When the conductor does not move the electrostatic lines may be in any radial direction and perpendicular to the both- movement line and the magnetic line. So there will be a random not directional static field that will not create the EMF. And when the conductor starts to move the magnetic lines are directed clockwise and in this case the electrostatic field(EMF)cannot help but to get itself in the direction that is perpendicular to the magnetic line and the movement.Electrostatic field becomes directional now and electrons will be trying to move to you and the positives away from you. If you connect the ends of the conductor that is close the electrostatic path ,current will sart to flow in the conductor that will create circular clockwise magnetic field around the conductor. To put it short : Movement of a conductor in a magnetic field creates a circular magnetic field, the circular magnetic field creates the directional electrostatic field or EMF (that direction depends on the direction of the movement of the conductor),and when you close the path of the electrostatic field current starts to flow.
