The Mg will decompose to Mg2+ and e-... the electrons bond with Hydrogen to form gas while Mg2+ bond with Cl- to become MgCl2... Ok, so how does that produce electricity? the electrons are used up to form various compounds... plz help

Becuse it seems that the power for this reaction is comming from the battery its self and not the reaction This site provides and example of a true chemical cell or battery Cheers, Ryan Jones
albertlee Posted October 30, 2005 Author Posted October 30, 2005 no ryan... the electrolyte will force the electrode of Mg to give away its electrons...and then Hydrogen will take those electrons and form H2... the Mg ions then attract Cl to form MgCl2... so, I see there's no extra electrons flowing... please help thx

dttom Posted October 31, 2005 Posted October 31, 2005 In simple chemical cells, electrons go through the external circuit. In your case, Mg gives up the two e- to form Mg2+, the e- given out then go through the external circuit to the positive terminal then to H+, this results in the formation of H2; while the result solution is MgCl2 because of Mg2+ and Cl-. The movemento of e- through the external circuit results in a current.
