herpguy Posted November 14, 2005 Author Posted November 14, 2005 Termites produce about 52% of the atmosphere's methane gas.
swansont Posted November 14, 2005 Posted November 14, 2005 Astatine is probably the rarest naturally occuring element with the whole Earth containing only about one ounce or 25g of this element! That's roughly what is estimated for Francium.
herpguy Posted November 14, 2005 Author Posted November 14, 2005 The praying mantis is the only insect that can turn its head sidways like humans.
RyanJ Posted November 14, 2005 Posted November 14, 2005 That's roughly what is estimated for Francium. I thought it was man-made? Oh well Water is unusual in that its boilling and melting points are much higher than other simmilar Hydrogen based compounds. Cheers, Ryan Jones
CanadaAotS Posted November 15, 2005 Posted November 15, 2005 Water is the only compound known to be less dense as a solid then a liquid. The only mammals to shed saltwater tears are aquatic mammals and humans. anti-matter is the most expensive substance on earth, costing (at low estimate) $25 billion / gram. 1
RyanJ Posted November 15, 2005 Posted November 15, 2005 Water is one of only a few substances that expand when they freeze. Hydrogen is the most abundant eleemnt sin the universe, constituting almost 90% os all the atoms in the universe! Helium in its liquid state has a feature called superfluidity, that means it experiences no friction and is able to climb out of containers! It does this untill it meets its own "level". Neon and Helium are the only two elements with no compounds what so ever although ionic compounds such as [ce]HeD^{+}[/ce] and [ce](NeH)^{+}[/ce] have been formed! Cheers, Ryan Jones
herpguy Posted November 18, 2005 Author Posted November 18, 2005 In an airtight room, you will die from breathing in your own toxic carbon dioxide, not from lack of oxygen.
rakuenso Posted November 18, 2005 Posted November 18, 2005 that's why I always bring a plant whenever I go into a room
ecoli Posted November 18, 2005 Posted November 18, 2005 In an airtight room, you will die from breathing in your own toxic carbon dioxide, not from lack of oxygen. Carbonic acid?
RyanJ Posted November 18, 2005 Posted November 18, 2005 The most powerful explosive explosive known is as a Tritruim fussion bomb and is one of the most descricuve devices created by man! Onle 1 person has been the sole reseptant for 2 Noble prizes. A form of thermite can be used to extract pure Uranium! It is sometimes called the Ames process. Cheers, Ryan Jones
clarisse Posted December 1, 2005 Posted December 1, 2005 Only 1 person in 2billion will live to be 116 Americans collectively eat one hundred pounds of chocolate every second
Glider Posted December 1, 2005 Posted December 1, 2005 Another fact on amphibians: One of the smallest frogs in the world has the largest tadpole, it grows backwards! This is the African Paradoxical frog. It spends most of life cycle as a tadpole and only matures to reproduce.
vrus Posted December 1, 2005 Posted December 1, 2005 During hibernation, a hedgehog's body temperature drops to about 5.5 degrees C. Its heart beats between 2 and 6 times a minute and it only takes from 1-3 breaths per minute. However the mammal with the lowest body temperature during hiberantion is the hamster with a body temperature of 3.5 degrees C.
NPK Posted December 3, 2005 Posted December 3, 2005 Termites produce about 52% of the atmosphere's methane gas. More specifically, it is the methanogenic Archaea inside the termites that produce the methane.
NPK Posted December 3, 2005 Posted December 3, 2005 Contrary to popular belief, cows don't fart a lot - they burp.
insane_alien Posted December 3, 2005 Posted December 3, 2005 NPK - You should see(hear and smell them as well) the cows in the field behind my house. you might reconsider that statement.
NPK Posted December 4, 2005 Posted December 4, 2005 NPK - You should see(hear and smell them as well) the cows in the field behind my house. you might reconsider that statement. lol Yea, they burp more than they fart though.
Douglas Posted December 4, 2005 Posted December 4, 2005 An ounce of gold thrown into a rushing river for 1000 years, will still be an ounce of gold. A LUMP OF PURE GOLD THE SIZE OF A MATCHBOOK CAN BE FLATTENED INTO A SHEET THE SIZE OF A TENNIS COURT
starbug1 Posted December 4, 2005 Posted December 4, 2005 Isaac Asimov is the only author to publish a book in every category of the Dewey Decimal system except philosophy.
computerages Posted December 4, 2005 Posted December 4, 2005 The average velocity for the moon to make one revolution around the Earth is approximately 1024.8 m/s, which is equivalent to the amount of megabytes (1024 MB) in a gigabyte (1 GB).
Edtharan Posted December 4, 2005 Posted December 4, 2005 Other than Nuclear bombs the bigest explosion that has been created by humans was a Wheat Silo
navynuke Posted December 4, 2005 Posted December 4, 2005 Solder, made up of lead and tin, has a lower melting point than either lead or tin.
RyanJ Posted December 4, 2005 Posted December 4, 2005 Tin has the most stable isotopes of any element (10 of them). Cesium Hydroxide has the highest pH possible, 15, and can dissolve glass. Glass is not actually solid but is a Thixotropic Liquid. Viruses may some day be used to fight colds via genetic engineering. Cheers, Ryan Jones
ecoli Posted December 4, 2005 Posted December 4, 2005 Viruses may some day be used to fight colds via genetic engineering. That's not a fact... that's wishful thinking.
RyanJ Posted December 4, 2005 Posted December 4, 2005 That's not a fact... that's wishful thinking. Its a fact, its already being tested as such and is therefor a fact. Another one seeing as I'm posting. Helium is the only known element that does not form a solid state at standard pressure no matter what temperature you try due to its weak inter-molecular forces! Cheers, Ryan Jones
