insane_alien Posted February 26, 2006 Posted February 26, 2006 THe official meter is marked on a platinum pole and stored in Paris Not any more. its been redefine to the distance light travels in a 1/299,792,458 of a second.
aj47 Posted February 26, 2006 Posted February 26, 2006 More than 6,000 people with pillow-related injuries check into U.S. emergency rooms every year A jiffy is an actual unit of time for 1/100th of a second. Thus the saying, I will be there in a jiffy. People in nudist colonies play volleyball more than any other sport. Coconuts kill more people in the world than sharks do. Approximately 150 people are killed each year by coconuts.
insane_alien Posted February 26, 2006 Posted February 26, 2006 in 1976, a Los Angeles secretary named Jannene Swift officially married a fifty pound rock. More than twenty people witnessed the ceremony. The Chinese politician Mao Zedong refused to ever brush his teeth and instead just washed his mouth with tea.
pHoToN_gUrL Posted March 4, 2006 Posted March 4, 2006 If body temperature continues to drop, hypothermia results. But occasionally hypothermia can save lives. Hypothermia slows down bodily processes, reducing the demand for oxygen by brain. Victims of near drowning in cold water thereby escape brain damage.
RyanJ Posted March 4, 2006 Posted March 4, 2006 many patterns in nature seem tofollow fractal-type patterns... For example leaves of ferns: http://mathworld.wolfram.com/images/eps-gif/Fractal2_1000.gif Cheers, Ryan Jones
pHoToN_gUrL Posted March 4, 2006 Posted March 4, 2006 a cockroach can live a week without its head (it dies of thirst). female black widow spiders eat thier males after mating. the thermometer was invented in 1607 by Galileo some dogs can smell the presence of autism in children. more germs are transfered shaking hands than kissing. some species of bamboo grow at a rate of 3ft per day. saturn would float if you could find an ocean big enough.
RyanJ Posted March 4, 2006 Posted March 4, 2006 Heres another one A ball of glass will bounce higher than a ball of rubber on a flat surface. A ball of solid steel will bounce higher than one made entirely of glass. Cheers, Ryan Jones
Daecon Posted March 5, 2006 Posted March 5, 2006 Heres another one A ball of glass will bounce higher than a ball of rubber on a flat surface. A ball of solid steel will bounce higher than one made entirely of glass. Cheers' date=' Ryan Jones[/quote'] Then why doesn't it?
RyanJ Posted March 5, 2006 Posted March 5, 2006 Then why doesn't it? It does. Find a nice flat paved concrete area and try it, the effect is more pronounced when comparing steel and rubber though Cheers, Ryan Jones
pHoToN_gUrL Posted March 5, 2006 Posted March 5, 2006 many patterns in nature seem tofollow fractal-type patterns... Indeed...fractals are unpredictable' date=' sensitive to small changes, and appear chaotic, even though that they were created using very straightforward, non-chaotic equations. Mandelbrot is the most famous fractal n has been referred to as the most complex object in mathematics. It is described with this equation: Z=Z*Z+c. Of the two images that RyanJ posted, the one at the right is the Mandelbrot Snowman Fractal. Fractals in nature: coastlines, clouds, rivers, mountains, lighting, seashells, trees, flowers.... Also, recent versions of the inflationary cosmos theory suggest that the universe is a huge growing fractal [/color']
RyanJ Posted March 5, 2006 Posted March 5, 2006 Yup, fractals apprear everywhere. here are a fe more (thanks Wikipdia) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Glue1_800x600.jpg http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Square1.jpg http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Microwaved-DVD.jpg http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Fractal_Broccoli.jpg As we have said found everywhere The idea of a self-crystalising fractal sounds pretty annoying as fractals are based of unpredictable chaeoic systems... cubexican Posted March 5, 2006 Posted March 5, 2006 If someone was to take all the human intestines (large and small) in the world, strech them and attach them together they would reach the moon and back to form a loop. That's just ridiculous. If you try to calculate the amount of space that the intestines would take up if they were compressed into something (say a human body), it would be larger than the human itself. I've read in textbooks that it's 25 ft combined.
ecoli Posted March 5, 2006 Posted March 5, 2006 ecoli does not taste like it smells very true... I taste awful. I'm a "he" btw, not an it.
Inspiration Posted March 5, 2006 Posted March 5, 2006 Atoms are about ten millionth of a millimeter across and weigh 100 trillionth of a trillionth of a gram Plants contain an even higher proportion of water than human body Actually, atom it's weight can be determined by some simple additoin. An electrons amu = 1 / 1840 acutal mass (g) = 9.11 x 10 ^-28 A Protons or Neutrons amu = 1 actual mass (g) = 1.67 x 10^-24 (1 amu = 1.66 x 10 ^-24 g) Just to be picky.
RyanJ Posted March 5, 2006 Posted March 5, 2006 Here is a prety interesting one I think: The total combined weight of the worlds ant population is heavier than the weight of the human population. Cheers, Ryan Jones

cubexican Posted March 5, 2006 Posted March 5, 2006 He said everybodys[/i'] intestines added together not one persons. Woops, misread
insane_alien Posted March 5, 2006 Posted March 5, 2006 no problem. but if its a thread about facts we might as well get them right
aj47 Posted March 5, 2006 Posted March 5, 2006 thought this was quite interesting.... Murder is one of the only crimes that do not increase during the full moon. Theft, disorderly conduct, larceny, armed robbery, assault and battery, and rape all statistically increase dramatically during the full moon.

EvoN1020v Posted March 6, 2006 Posted March 6, 2006 The X-33 Space Plane can go up to the speed of Mach 15. Did the American invented the Internet? WRONG. The Web began here (Gevena, Switzerland) as a network of in-house computer sites. It enabled scientists from different departments to share daily findings with one another.
