I'm a bit dismayed as to how all the other sciences have detailed sections, but chemistry only has a single one and is listed under other sciences.

My idea for a more detailed one would be like an entire heading under "Chemstry" that would have seperate forums like Biochemistry or Nuclear chemistry or such. Why can't it be like that?

Anyway.. yeah, this was a bit random. >.>

Indeed, it is a bit unfair being stuck in the Other Sciences section when Chemistry is one of the main sciences!

There are loads of sub-catigories,

Radiochemistry, Biochemistry, Organic Chemistry, Analytical chemistry, Inorganic chemistry etc.

I know. I was shocked to see that when I first came here. I was like, where is chemistry? I didn't even see it at first and I was pretty bumbed out until it finally caught my eye.

I don't really see the need to split up chemistry into more than just chemistry. I feel that pretending there is a difference between organic and inorganic chemistry does more harm than good. A seperate section for analytical makes sense though, but not very much. Physical chemistry is physics, right?

I propose that we simply put chemistry on its own at the top of the page with some sort of effect to make it appear as it was sent from heaven followed by a division that says "Physics, math, and the lower sciences."

I also move that English not be allowed to be used in the Philosophy and Religion section and I don't understand why the top of my page says "Science Forums and Debate." Debate? Why?

Maybe inorganic and organic should not be split but I don't think that physical chemistry is physics, its how you would extract Iron from iron oxide, how you would make Sodium Hydroxide and purify it etc.

Alalytical chemistry is another important one that deals with the calculations such as working out the number of moles in xxx ammount of a substance etc.

Those should definatly have their own sections as the maths experts may also be able to help with then too.

Yes, I've been considering this myself over the past few weeks. About a year and a half ago, the Chemistry section did indeed have a couple of forums, but it wasn't particularly successful and I put forward the suggestion to combine them into a single forum. However, it seems that the Chemistry section has been very popular amongst the newcomers, and activity has peaked there quite a bit. So, in hindsight, it was a bit of a bad suggestion from myself.

I've recently had the thought of redesigning the forums a bit, and having a general "Sciences" category. Then each discipline can have specialised subfora, as well as a general category. So for example, it might look something like this:

-+ Sciences
|-+ Physics (new)
| |- Classical Mechanics
| |- Quantum Mechanics
| |- Relativity
| |- Modern/Theoretical Physics
| |- Astronomy and Cosmology
|-+ Mathematics (old general mathematics forum)
| |- Analysis and Calculus
| |- Linear Algebra and Group Theory (rename of Abstract Algebra)
| |- Applied Mathematics
| |- Math Problems
|-+ Medical Sciences (old general medicine forum)
| |- Anatomy and Physiology
| |- Microbiology and Immunology
| |- Genetics
| |- Neuroscience
| |- Psychiatry and Psychology
|-+ Chemistry (old chemistry forum)
| |- ... (to be decided)
|-+ Biological Sciences (old general biology forum)
| |- Evolution, Morphology and Exobiology
| |- Ecology and the Environment
| |- Biochemistry and Molecular Biology
|-+ Computer Science
| |- Computer Help
|-+ Engineering

What I'll try and do is create a static HTML file with these subforum arrangements and show everybody what it looks like. Of course, this is only speculative at best (I haven't even asked the staff what they think yet ;)) but I think it'd make the entire thing a lot more compact and easier to digest.

well it certainly has my Backing, even if only Organic/Inorganic/General chem sections, and I certainly wouldn`t mind moving threads over to the appropriate sections when I have time and it`s quiet here :)

I know my opinion means pretty close to nothing but I'd reorganize this a bit from fundamental to less fundamental.

Top of the page Physics (and Astronomy) and Mathematics (even though Math is a language). Followed by Chemistry, Biochemistry. Then Biology and Medical, Ecology. Then Geology, climatology. Then to engineering, technology, and computer science.

That list up top looks a bit random. I also feel that less division into further subgroups is better than more division, just as a general rule.

I'm not going to be introducing a load of new fora, but I'll re-order them in a more sensible way. I'm going to start off and get going with the re-organisation in a few minutes, though.

Loos sweet dave, do you think there will be any chemistry sub-forums added?

Cheers,

Ryan Jones

Yeah, there will be some added just as soon as the chemisty experts/mods decide on the names and descriptions. I don't know enough about the subject to suggest any at this time :)

Score!

Indded, looks like they have all been added :D

A lot of the forums got changed, looks liek Dave had been thinking about this for some time :D
