What happens when my laptop goes into hibernation? What disks are shut off, and what stays on? And also, would anybody recomend doing this rather then a regular shut down?

thanks :)

When the computer hibernates, all data from RAM and current processes is saved to disk. The computer then shuts everything down, like a normal shutdown. When you turn it back on, it loads all that data back into RAM and resumes all of the processes.

It's essentially just as good as a normal shutdown.
