Pangloss Posted December 11, 2005 Posted December 11, 2005 I was just wondering if you guys are using Firefox 1.5, and what you think of it so far. I've heard it's buggy so I've been a little hesitant to upgrade from 1.4 that I'm using now. Is it worth it or should I hold out a bit and wait for some patches?
Cap'n Refsmmat Posted December 11, 2005 Posted December 11, 2005 I haven't had any problems with it during my use now. The update system works fine now (there were a few problems during the RCs) and all has been well. I'd recommend you update. Things are a bit faster and I like drag-and-drop tabs.
RyanJ Posted December 11, 2005 Posted December 11, 2005 No problems at all plus you get SVG support @ecoli: Love the quote in your sig Cheers, Ryan Jones
ecoli Posted December 11, 2005 Posted December 11, 2005 No problems at all plus you get SVG support @ecoli: Love the quote in your sig Thanks, though I actually should give credit to my brother for telling me that one. PS - http://www.thinkgeek.com/tshirts/science/7d73/
RyanJ Posted December 11, 2005 Posted December 11, 2005 HeHe, thanks ecoli - I'm shure my uncle will want one of those! On the topic of Firefox a lot of interesting features are planned for 2.0, look out IE and Opera Here is a very small sample of the stuff too be included in future versions: http://wiki.mozilla.org/Firefox:2.0_Product_Planning Like I siad there is a lot not on that list but lets just say Firefox is already the leading browser in standards support and will soon push the boundaries even further Cheers, Ryan Jones
Cap'n Refsmmat Posted December 11, 2005 Posted December 11, 2005 ']Like I siad there is a lot not on that list but lets just say Firefox is already the leading browser in standards support and will soon push the boundaries even further Actually Opera is a bit better, and Safari just passed Acid2. But each release of FF is getting a lot better, especially compared to what IE7 will do compared to IE6...
ecoli Posted December 11, 2005 Posted December 11, 2005 Actually Opera is a bit better, and Safari just passed Acid2. When did Safari drop Acid1? anyway... I do indeed like Safari when using macs. It's a hundred times more user accesable then IEmac.
Dave Posted December 11, 2005 Posted December 11, 2005 Back to Firefox 1.5 - I'm having no problems, and have even been using it since Deer Park; even back then it was surprisingly stable. The only minor niggle I've found is that once in a few hundred times, when right-clicking repeatedly on a page (I do it while I'm browsing ), the contextual menu will sometimes jump for no apparent reason. But that is quite blatently a very minor issue.
RyanJ Posted December 11, 2005 Posted December 11, 2005 Actually Opera is a bit better, and Safari just passed Acid2. But each release of FF is getting a lot better, especially compared to what IE7 will do compared to IE6... Actually no, Opera had a lower standards rating than Firefox (Just!).... http://nanobox.chipx86.com/browser_support.php?FX1_5=on&OP8=on&uas=CUSTOM Firefox has the higher rating (Because it did when the beta version was added) and thus even though some of the features have not yet been tested Firefox still beat Opera. The full standards tables cna be found here: http://nanobox.chipx86.com/browser_support_html.php http://nanobox.chipx86.com/browser_support_css.php http://nanobox.chipx86.com/browser_support_dom.php http://nanobox.chipx86.com/browser_support_ecmascript.php Overall Firefox won with Opera a close second and its not even worth mentioning IE in this context as it is so far behind... Cheers, Ryan Jones Cheers, Ryan Jones
Cap'n Refsmmat Posted December 11, 2005 Posted December 11, 2005 I think we can safely agree that Opera supports more HTML and Firefox more CSS. HTML Firefox: 83% Opera: 88% CSS Firefox: 65% Opera: 62% But that's minor. We can also safely say that Firefox 1.5 has gotten a lot better than 1.0 in standards support, and I haven't had any bugs so far.

All the latest standards are going to be complied with... thats going to be some job Cheers, Ryan Jones
MattC Posted December 12, 2005 Posted December 12, 2005 I have used 1.5 since public release on 5 different computers and I have experienced no bugs at all.
Pangloss Posted December 12, 2005 Author Posted December 12, 2005 Thanks all. I've actually been real happy with 1.4, which I upgraded to from Mozilla 1.7. Just a few minor hitches here and there really.

Anyway 1.5 is great because of its new caching, you really can tell the difference when clicking the back and forward buttons. The canvas element is something that I have recently been playing around with, a script I wrote actually got slashdotted a while back! No problems with it at all.
