My Hard Drive Is Going Insane!!!!

my computer started making unusual scratching and clicking sound and a sound like something was restarting in the cpu. i pinpointed it to the harddrive. now my harddrive isnt detected and wont boot. HELP

Sounds like a classic hard drive failure. But before jumping to that, have you checked other things such as the CPU fans etc.?

 

If you have and it is the hard drive there is not much you can do, if the hard drive has suffered by a mechanical failure then you can't access the information on the drive without specialist equiptment, as long as you have a backup you'll need to get a new drive (Probably unless it can be fixed which in most cases is impossible) and restore the backup. If you don't have a backup then you now have problems, if there was any valuable data on the drive you'll need to see a speicalist to recover the data for you.

could try booting off of a live CD to try and rescue data off of it, there is a possibility of getting some of it off. I've done this in the pasted.

 

knoppix.com <--- a good live CD for doing this quickly and easily.

 

But yeah sounds like the disk is dead...

If the hard drive won't boot and what he heard sounds like a hard drive failing (assuming it was the hard drive) then it is unlikely any data will be recoverable from it because the hard drive has failed... still, worth a try.

The hard drive is a spinning disk, it's making noise and it's not meant to, there must be something wrong with it inside. Maybe the motor, maybe the read/write head is somehow touching the spinning disk... I don't know exactly or why it would have happened.

 

If it is broken and you can still read data off it maybe you should think about backing up data on it in case the problem gets worst.

Yea, a lot of things cna happen, it could be something has broken and is causing the spindle to jam and make a noise, the spinde that is attatched to the motor could also be damaged.

 

If you wnat to get the data back DO NOT continue to turn the computer on and off, leave it off and see a specialist, turning the computer on and allowing the disk to spin could cause a lot more damamge - you'll probably get more data recovered if you leave it alone for now

Depending on the age of the disk nearly deffiniately, but that would mean you'd have to give them the disk with all your data on it :|

Not always the bestt idea, I cna never have this done too my computer because of the data that is stored on the hard drives.

 

You should try a specialist and see what they advise, if your unhappy with the price you can always ask them for free advice

i "inherited" the computer from my brother and since it was really slow i put ubuntu on and replaced windows entirly so i dont have any important data on it. would it be better to contact dell or western digital?

Its worth a try, if the warantee has expired though don't expect any help from them at all

I'd personally turn it on and backup the data myself.

 

If it's broken beyond working for a short time whilst I recover data then it's broken beyond working... unless the specialist takes the data part out and places it in a new hard drive unit (quite hard to do) they won't get any data off it.
