It`s been annonced today that in the UK the police will no longer arrest you for possesion of cannabis, and in 4 months time it will be degraded in status to a class C drug.

no weights or exact measurements were given as to how much constitutes possesion or "dealing", but it`s a step in the right direction :)

and I don`t even smoke the stuff !!! :)

Ahh....the slippery slope, thin end of the wedge, it only needs a start..etc. etc. etc. If it means the police have more time to spend on the hard drug dealers then I'm all for it but they're under-resourced anyway so I doubt it will make a diff. And I suspect that this is what it's really all about....cutting costs.

It isnt going to be legalised, a class C drug is still an illegal substance and the police will arrest you if you smoke a joint in a public place, are carrying more than is deemed for personal use or you have been caught with cannabis before.

I say we have public tortures and executions for anyone caught committing a crime!!

....better stay inside and stop driving myself I guess then...

Fafalone, yeah, to a point, it is true that some people have adverse reactions to the weed, paranoia, panic attacks, Schitzophenic episodes. But it does have the advantage of being temporary and impossible to overdose on whereas "harder" drugs can kill you outright if you take too much.

Class `C`? what exactly does that mean in real terms? what other things are class C that I may have heard of?

and do Alcohol and Tobacco have a drug class?

class C is basically an offense like stealing cookies, not many people (important people) care

they care about the higher level offenses like B and A like rape and armed robbery

Different legal terms in the UK to the US (even though it's based on the UK model :P ) it's from the Misuse of Drugs Act in the UK.

Class A is Heroin, cocaine, LSD etc and maximum prison time is life for supply.

Class B is speed and designer drugs, and 5 years prison time for supply.

Class C is Valium, tranquillisers or any none harmfull perscription drug. Still carrys up to a 5 year sentance, but it's up to the Judge as to the time to be served.

But the class structure is basically the same, class 1 and 2 are the cases that get you sent to jail and class 3 is the same risk as stealing cookies.

The effects from Canabis are far from temporary, have a look around any town center and you will find the local pothead with his brain fried from overuse, singing at the clouds.

Alcohol has classifications, but no classifications under the Misuse of Drugs Act. For instance Snakebite is not legal (half cider half lager and blackcurrent) and neither is ponteen etc, I don't really know why.

true, but it is the minority that get effected adversly, it`s a pity that when they DO get effected though, it`s very dramatic!

take a look here at the "Difficult experiences" and the "Bad Trips" posts, pretty scary stuff!

I can rellate to a few of the stories myself, that`s why I don`t smoke it myself, had some laced stuff about 16 years ago, I`ve never touched it since, even the smell gives me an uneasy feeling (Pavlov Dogs).

but on the whole, I don`t think it`s a bad drug, it`s just like any other, Moderation`s the key.

Alot of the "hard" drugs are better for your health and mind than weed is...

you haven't been watching those propaganda films have you? the most serious affect to the brain I know about is a change in ceratonin levels, and memory loss. lungs are a different story but even with that, people dont smoke the same amount they do as tobacco, and only smoke about once a day. that's not even counting the fact that most people dont smoke every day. i don't get what is so "hazardous" about it. i've had no problems, well none that didnt already exist like me being dumb.

Matter I agree with on most of your points there, but I also understand what Faf was saying too, you can live a good long life on herion or cocaine with little to non of the adverse effects that cannabis MAY cause. what he didn`t say is that he`s refering to pharmacutical grade products, the street stuff WILL kill ya! it mixed with everything from Ajax oven cleaner to rat poison and not withstanding that, it`s hardly sterile either. whereas cannabis (smoked) the heat sterilises it for you. a good many very famous people were hooked on coke or herion (some scientists too!) but the stuff was pure and correctly dosed.

I dare say that if delta9 TetraHydroCannibinol was pharmacuticaly pure also, the same would apply, but it would still "take out" the ones predisposed to mental illness.

yesterday in Boston they had a freedom rally for marijuana. hightimes and NORML sponsored it. I was there it was pretty cool. there was free music, and tons of vendors to buy merchandise from. people were smoking joints and blunts and pretty much anything else in the area in front of the stage, and the cops kept a conscious distance from that area, but they were around. It's funny how at concerts at rally's like that, the cops dont care about people getting high. Alaska is already moving towards reforming laws, and I think the rest of the country is on its way. very cool gathering yesterday. the cops were cool.
