Cap'n Refsmmat Posted January 4, 2006 Posted January 4, 2006 All right folks, I've been getting this together for a while now and I think it's ready for the public to take a look at. Long long ago, blike created a wiki called OpenScience for SFN users to fill up with scientific encyclopedia entries. It died off quickly (webhost didn't want the extra database) but now that SFN is larger, we've decided to try again. And this time, it's named WiSci. I'm asking all of you users to come and help make new articles at http://www.wisci.org. Be sure to read through the style standards and such (linked on the main page) before writing an article, of course. I'd also like a few users to help creating the policy and some templates for common use (stub templates, etc). If you show that you're valuable for the wiki (make good articles, help out a lot, etc) then I'll set up the nominations for the next sysop to help administrate. So, for the moment, I would be glad if people simply came, expanded the current articles (they're rather rough) and helped create the categories system. I'd also like people to expand on the style guide (see Wikipedia's for inspiration) and help me create a formal policy. Also, please see http://scienceforums.net/forums/showthread.php?t=17472 for another request. http://www.wisci.org/wiki/Main_Page Thanks!
Cap'n Refsmmat Posted January 4, 2006 Author Posted January 4, 2006 Could a mod move this thread to Announcements, please? After all, it is sponsored by SFN.
DV8 2XL Posted January 4, 2006 Posted January 4, 2006 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Requests_for_arbitration/Benjamin_Gatti/Evidence http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Requests_for_arbitration/Carl_Hewitt/Evidence http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Requests_for_arbitration/Reddi_2/Evidence Here are examples of three type of editor that policies should discourage participating in this project. They are the reasons I no longer edit at Wikipedia. The first is a single issue anti-nuke that has stated that the rules should not apply to him because of the importance of his message. The second is a prof. at M.I.T trying to use Wikipedia to give his own research more weight than it is given within the field. The third is a worshiper of Velikovsky and Tesla and fights tenaciously to insert their ideas everywhere he can. Similar will show up here, and you would best have a mechanism to deal with them swiftly and effectively or this will be overrun too.
Cap'n Refsmmat Posted January 4, 2006 Author Posted January 4, 2006 This is why I suggested that others will help me create the policy. I'll start a draft soon, and I'll let you create a few additions for it if you'd like.
ecoli Posted January 4, 2006 Posted January 4, 2006 I suggest possibly requiring to create a username and password in order to edit it (perhaps the same as your SFN screen name). That way, if someone adds controversal info. at least we'll know who it is.
Cap'n Refsmmat Posted January 4, 2006 Author Posted January 4, 2006 I'm not quite sure about that idea--it would detract from the "wiki" standpoint. IP addresses should be sufficient. Also, I don't want this to be a complete duplicate of SFN's members--both should be independent of each other.
DV8 2XL Posted January 4, 2006 Posted January 4, 2006 IP addresses are not sufficient at Wikipedia anymore. As of last week you cannot start a topic as an annon.
Cap'n Refsmmat Posted January 4, 2006 Author Posted January 4, 2006 Indeed, so I have heard. I think I may do that on WiSci, but I'll really just wait to see how things turn out. Perhaps you can start a discussion on the Community Portal about that.
The Thing Posted January 4, 2006 Posted January 4, 2006 What happens when two people edit one article at the same time? It actually happened! I was editting the Stirling Engines article I created, and the captain was editting it too. He finished first . I didn't though . So when I finished, there was something funny going on saying the thing has changed, and I don't remember what I pressed, but it ended up being the captain's version, and all my new info was gone...
the tree Posted January 4, 2006 Posted January 4, 2006 Hey look at me! Im creating templates and everything already!
RyanJ Posted January 5, 2006 Posted January 5, 2006 I'm guessing the experts will be much needed on this project Also, if you use Firefox (Which you should be ) then this may be of use too you if you are interested in this project: http://wikipedia.mozdev.org/ Cheers, Ryan Jones
blike Posted January 5, 2006 Posted January 5, 2006 Because this post is now in the announcements forum, it is no longer open for public comments. You can continue to discuss the project here or in the forthcoming discussion thread (I'll edit and post a link when it is made).
DV8 2XL Posted January 7, 2006 Posted January 7, 2006 Cap'n Refsmmat and I have been working on the policies for the new wiki but it would sure be helpful if we could get some input from a few more people.
eruheru Posted January 8, 2006 Posted January 8, 2006 I'm guessing the experts will be much needed on this project Also' date=' if you use Firefox (Which you should be ) then this may be of use too you if you are interested in this project: http://wikipedia.mozdev.org/ [/quote'] is there anything that works with firefox v1.5?
RyanJ Posted January 8, 2006 Posted January 8, 2006 is there anything that works with firefox v1.5? Nope, right now its been updated - I'll post here and let everyone know when its updated for V1.5 Cheers, Ryan Jones
danny8522003 Posted January 10, 2006 Posted January 10, 2006 Hey guys. I've added a couple of things in but im not too sure about the code atm so it's still very rough. Helping where i can though.
PhDP Posted January 13, 2006 Posted January 13, 2006 I've added a references, well, I've tryied at least on the article "Evolution", but the format used in wikipedia doesn't work on WiSci, for exemple in the article "Molecular evolution"; * * It doesn't work on WiSci.
ecoli Posted January 20, 2006 Posted January 20, 2006 Out of curiosity, how many articles do we have now?
herpguy Posted January 22, 2006 Posted January 22, 2006 Out of curiosity, how many articles do we have now? 91 I am writing this random sentence to make it long enough to post.
matt grime Posted February 12, 2006 Posted February 12, 2006 Oh. My. God. I feel the compelling urge to correct everything in sight based upon one sentence. "Algebra is a branch of mathematics concerned with structure and quantity, but not with arithmetic because it uses symbols rather than numbers." how do i find out who wrote that?
