Millan Posted January 15, 2006 Posted January 15, 2006 Hi: a) an atoms electron is in the ground state (-4.11*10^ -17). An electron with ke 5*10^-17 collides with the atom, what happens to the energy. b) What could subsequently happen to the electrons in the higher energy levels help plz Yes energy = - 4.11E-17 J my mistake lol I think the answer is that the atom gets ionised and the remaining enegry becomes the KE of the free electron. but im confused as to the words 'what happens to the ENERGY' (is it just absorbed by the electron in the ground state and the rest goes to KE) and part b) i think it is the electrons drop down energy levels emmiting light - photons with discrete frequencies hence discrete wavelengths. but the questions says 'subsequently' , so im not sure if its right or is its just there to put you off.
□h=-16πT Posted January 15, 2006 Posted January 15, 2006 This is a question from the AQA (I think) Physics module 1 paper isn't it? I sat that the other week. That's pretty much what I put for a) and b). I mentioned something about work being done by the electron in leaving the atom, there being an increase in potential energy and decrease in kinetic as it escapes.
Millan Posted January 15, 2006 Author Posted January 15, 2006 yh it is l0l . The questions seemed a bit d0dgey th0 (i think they were trying to confuse people with the wording of the questions), how did you find the rest of the exam.
□h=-16πT Posted January 15, 2006 Posted January 15, 2006 yh it is l0l . The questions seemed a bit didgey th0, how did you find the rest of the exam. Easy, really. Saying that, I'll fail it. Still have S1, D1 and philosophy exams left to sit next week. God, I hate A level physics.
□h=-16πT Posted January 15, 2006 Posted January 15, 2006 what are u AS or A2 level AS, it's boring. Not that A2 is any better.
□h=-16πT Posted January 15, 2006 Posted January 15, 2006 what are u AS or A2 level AS, it's boring. Not that A2 is any better. Oh well, my teacher lets me read stuff of my own in lesson. How about yourself? What exams do you have?
Millan Posted January 15, 2006 Author Posted January 15, 2006 finsished all my exams in the first week bio, chem, physics - what subjects do you take ?
□h=-16πT Posted January 15, 2006 Posted January 15, 2006 Maths, further maths, physics and philosophy. I took philosophy because I hate biology and chemistry and there wasn't anything else that really complements my first three options besides those three. That and I like it.
Millan Posted January 15, 2006 Author Posted January 15, 2006 whats philosophy like (btw do you go on the student room)
□h=-16πT Posted January 15, 2006 Posted January 15, 2006 whats philosophy like (btw do you go on the student room) Philosophy isn't too bad. So far we've covered Ancient Greek philosophy (Plato, Aristotle and Socrates), Judeo-Christian concept of God and Meta-/Normative-Ethics, that's the first module. At the moment we're doing Kantian ethics (Catagorical Imperative) and religious philosophy. It starts off a bit tedious but looks interesting for the rest of AS and A2. Student room?
Millan Posted January 15, 2006 Author Posted January 15, 2006 i see, so do you go on the student room.
