Royston Posted January 16, 2006 Posted January 16, 2006 Please see the article below (you may have to scroll down the page a bit) http://www.physorg.com/news9794.htmlJan%2012 Norway is to build a "doomsday vault" in a mountain close to the North Pole that will house a vast seed bank to ensure food supplies in the event of catastrophic climate change, nuclear war or rising sea levels, New Scientist says.
insane_alien Posted January 16, 2006 Posted January 16, 2006 Its pointless if there is no one left to open it.
Royston Posted January 16, 2006 Author Posted January 16, 2006 Its pointless if there is no one left to open it. Well errr, yeah, but don't you think it's better to take precautionary measures incase of a tradegy, rather than not bothering under the assumption the entire human race is going to be wiped out ?
doG Posted January 16, 2006 Posted January 16, 2006 If I understand Murphy's law correctly that mountain will now become the target of any future asteroid destined for a collision with Earth.
insane_alien Posted January 16, 2006 Posted January 16, 2006 I read that it was only a back-up incase all the other vaults around the world were unusable anyways. chances are it'll never be used, at least i hope so.
herpguy Posted January 16, 2006 Posted January 16, 2006 Is this seed bank for the whole world or just Norway? How much will it cost to build it?
insane_alien Posted January 16, 2006 Posted January 16, 2006 its for the whole world. the reason its built in Norway is that is is a "safe" country and has permafrost. the permafrost keeps the seeds viable and its not likely to be a target of a nuclear war.
JustStuit Posted January 16, 2006 Posted January 16, 2006 That's a pretty interesting idea. I hope it will never need to be used but it's good to keep backup. I wonder if they can use it for anything else other than seeds if they had extra space. Who knows what else they could put in there.
chemfreak Posted January 16, 2006 Posted January 16, 2006 Its pointless if there is no one left to open it. if so. who can even open it , Air Loks? if there were some accident noone would be able to open it.
Phi for All Posted January 16, 2006 Posted January 16, 2006 Are there similar Doomsday vaults with human and animal "seeds"? If I understand Murphy's law correctly that mountain will now become the target of any future asteroid destined for a collision with Earth.Did Norway buy any Murphy-proof mousetraps?
doG Posted January 16, 2006 Posted January 16, 2006 Are there similar Doomsday vaults with human and animal "seeds"? Did Norway buy any Murphy-proof mousetraps? Maybe there's a market for Murphy's insurance as a result of such vaults
