herpguy Posted January 16, 2006 Posted January 16, 2006 I thought this was an interesting article from Yahoo! News. Taiwenese Researchers Breed Glowing Pigs TAIPEI, Taiwan - Pigs may not be able to fly just yet, but at least three of them glow. Taiwanese researchers said Friday they have bred the pigs with a fluorescent material in a move they hope will benefit the island's stem cell research effort. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060114/ap_on_sc/taiwan_glowing_pigs;_ylt=AsXBPYGdV_A6Fr3FnsALs.4PLBIF;_ylu=X3oDMTA5aHJvMDdwBHNlYwN5bmNhdA--
insane_alien Posted January 16, 2006 Posted January 16, 2006 i wonder if they could make me glow green... that would be sweet.
ecoli Posted January 16, 2006 Posted January 16, 2006 I believe they did this with monkey's as well, at least, the fingernails glowed. I think it's just good ole gpf protein.
JustStuit Posted January 16, 2006 Posted January 16, 2006 Wow thats a pretty weird way to help stem cell research. I guess it could be used as an indicator and see how stuff works. They look strange..
zyncod Posted January 17, 2006 Posted January 17, 2006 It's a very good tracer for cell lineage. We use GFP+ mice - it's very weird. All their organs have a greenish tint, and they of course glow under UV light.
Cap'n Refsmmat Posted January 17, 2006 Posted January 17, 2006 i wonder if they could make me glow green... that would be sweet. Would be hard to sleep like that.
insane_alien Posted January 21, 2006 Posted January 21, 2006 Would be hard to sleep like that. I can fall asleep whenever i want most of the time. i guess i would just get used to it.
