JohnB
You're still thinking in terms of capitalist economics! Look - government will own all factories, industrial machinery, raw materials, etc. It doesn't NEED to pay for refining, manufacturing, production, construction, and everything else. All it needs to pay for are the workers. Um, no. What you appear not to understand is that the workers also have to come from somewhere. Assuming in this socialist heaven everybody has a job, then to start a new project then workers have to be transferred from existing jobs. Become soldier - you'll be trained to shoot rifle, fly jet, operate tank, you will become part of a giant fighting machine, and you will conquer new lands in the name of socialism. Wanna bet? Is this a comment from "The Peace loving people of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics"? I"ve heard it before. "I can no longer believe in Socialism, now that I have lived in Australia." Vladimir Petrov. Memenaut, I suppose you think the Berlin Wall was to keep the masses of the West out? You keep talking about the power of the people, well the people of the old socialist nations voted with their feet. As soon as they got the chance, they walked out. Aardvark
Look at how much it helped Russia - it was lifted out of the dark ages and turned into space-age super-power with planned economy. Check the facts. Russia was industrialising more rapidly under the Tsars before 1914 than it ever did under Stalin and his much vaulted 5 year plans. The idea that communist was responsible for the development of Russia is a widespread myth. Then it turned into 3rd world country again when it became capitalist. The USSR didn't become capitalist and so collapse. It collasped and THEN started to become capitalist. Big difference. That's a capitalist lie' date=' stop reading bourgeois agitprop. There was world-wide downturn in business in 1970s caused by recession and inflation. To prevent companies from collapsing and turning into anarchy, government had to nationalize everything. [/quote'] Wrong. Britain nationalised business's before the 1970's recessions. Your grasp of chronology is extremely weak. Britain instigated socialism and then suffered severe economic difficulties. Britain dismantled large parts of the socialist policies and recovered. Cause and effect. Socialism saved the world from the recession created by capitalism. But this isn't the history they teach at school. Socialism precipitated the recession. Chronology, cause and effect. Understand? Your arguments are so at variance with reality i think there is the possibility that you are a troll.
entwined
Here's why I think socialism works' date=' and why it's better than capitalism. I'll keep this short and informative. Health-care, education, and housing should be free, [/quote'] Nothing is free. The idea that something that requires effort is somehow "free" is no more practical that perpetual motion schemes. What you are talking about is a system where someone else pays for these things. That is not the same as free.

-Demosthenes-
You like risks? Become space colonist - you will travel to distant world' date=' terraform it while living in "space commune", then engineer a new bio-system to inhabit the planet, found a new society, and become its historic figure. Become cybernaut - your mind will be merged with machine, you will become part of greater entity, you will be free of the warped matrix of human perception, and you will transcend confines of the flesh. Become bio-engineer - you will experiment with new forms of life, play god in the role of evolution, and you will you will design the next generation of humans. Become nano-engineer - you'll assemble everything atom by atom, you will explore the world of bacteria and viruses, and you will create self-reproducing, self-organizing automatons that evolve to greater levels of complexity. Become soldier - you'll be trained to shoot rifle, fly jet, operate tank, you will become part of a giant fighting machine, and you will conquer new lands in the name of socialism. [/quote'] An attempt to associate socialism with futuristic scifi? "I will work harder!" said Horse. Only to be sent to the glue factory. Socialism precipitated the recession. Chronology' date=' cause and effect. Understand?[/quote'] Extreme socialism without a very good control over the people (such as totalitarianism) provides for democracy but equals economic hardship. Socialism with totalitarianism might be economically viable, but is certainly not democratically viable.
