in addition to the above' date=' does anyone think it would be a good idea to have SFN Staff as potential candidates? I personaly don`t think so (and have posted to this effect in the Staff area).

...[/quote']

I didnt see the discussion of this in staff area----missed somehow.

but I would agree with you about that: I think it would be a good idea to NOT have staff (mods and designated area experts I guess that means) be nominated

so that removes the need to have to pick among the contributions by Sev, Swansont, Atheist etc. Much better. In My Memory would be out of the running too, wouldn't she----cant remember if she is staff or not.

YT could you possibly provide us with a list of staff???!!! Just the names, not positions. that would let us know for sure who we are excluding from nomination if we decide to exclude staff.

What is it a picture of?

Are you serious? It's me when I busted out of my cocoon. I was so happy that I wasn't boiled alive that the picture turned out great. Since then I've been slowly but surely starving to death because I have no working mouth parts, but that's the price I pay to give the ladies more comfortable and flowing underwear.

Yeah, don't let staff be nominated so I can clean house.

Yeah I think leaving experts out is a good idea...due to the limited number (and the fact they've gained expert reputation already) they needn't be included.

That seems sensible, I think four categories would suffice...specialist in their field (whatever field that may be) best single post, best thread[/b'] and best all-rounder (someone who covers many topics, and is good to talk to.)

Not being funny...but, how come Silkworm's got the credit for my idea ?

congratulations on your suggestions, thanks for calling attention (I didnt read the whole thread:embarass:

you certainly are confident, aren't you.

so that is what a silk-moth adult looks like,

and it's job is to immediately mate and lay eggs on the leaves of the mulberry tree where it probably had its cocoon

it makes caterpillars seem handsome by comparison-----oh if we could only all stay young forever

Yes, and I nominate revprez. :D

for what honor?

Maybe for "Most effective hellraiser and challenger of authority in 2005"?

I think he had some definite plusses as a a SFN poster, but what specifically do you have in mind?

It can't just be "Poster of the Year" because that has to be a NICE person :)

My nominations:

"Peacekeeper Award" for excellence in moderation: Pangloss for his work in the Politics forum

"Best Singularitarian": Bascule

"Person I'd Most Likely Bake Cookies For": YT2095

"Most Delightfully Cynical": Sayonara3

"Shakespeare Incarnate": Phi for All ;)

"Most Egocentric Megalomaniac": In My Memory

"Best Male Avatar": Ecoli

"Best Female Avatar": Bettina

"Person I'd Most Like To Have Coffee With": Martin :)

"Most Gurl Power": AzurePhoenix

"Favoritest Poster Who Is Half My Age": Yourdadonapogos

Martin,

I would nominate IMM for the female avatar category if she still had that one that was a photo---not a cartoon. Now she has something like animé teenager----thumbs down.

I used a lot of photos, but I really like the cartoon one, its very me :)

Martin, you are far and away the best physicist on this board as far as helping me find what I'm looking for in terms of other scientists and papers related to LQG. The stuff you've posted on Lee Smolin is absolutely awesome and I've become quite a layman enthusiast of his work because of you. You also pointed me at Seth Lloyd before I started reading extensive elaborations on his ideas by Kurzweil, and well, he's awesome too.

"Best Singularitarian": [b']Bascule[/b]

Yay, glad to see I got quasi-props from someone

Martin,

here`s the staff list: http://www.scienceforums.net/forums/showgroups.php

this can also be found on the home-page on the left hand side, surprising listed as "Staff", Coincidence? I don`t think so! :)

also, I don`t think I started a thread about this in the Resident Experts area, I think it`s just in the Moderators/Admin area at the moment, but start one up by all means :)

;)

Interesting how infrequently some of the "luminaries" contribute to the forums.

I suppose there is something to be said for quality rather than quantity, and low profile policing.

Posted

we all "police" differently and come from a Wide section of areas and skills and personality types, that (in my opinion) is what makes our staff second to None!

as for Quality VS Quantity, some of us have been here for a very long time!

the full-length version is certainly lovely

and one can note some amiable ambiguity (between the graceful step turning to face the other, and the reserve or selfprotectiveness of the arm)

it really is a nice drawing

so I have to withdraw critical comment on the head-and-shoulders photo extracted from the full-length---and see it just an identifier for the whole person

I don't know, I think the cartoon version nicely displays her nicer traits while hiding that savagely effective poster we all love. Maybe you couldn't see it, but I saw a manic glint in her photo :P Don't want to give the prey a fair warning, now do we?

on the contrary I do think it is excellent when avatars give "warning" or anyway complex signals about facets of the person. I like ambiguity too----so there isnt one simple clear interpretation. I think that is why I liked the IMM photo (it didnt convey just one obvious idea)

also I thought your Yoda lightsaber gesture was brilliant

maybe I just hate to see avatars change because I attach the person I read to the image I see and then find it hard to transfer

are you going back to the old Yoda or sticking with the snapshot for now?

Azure looks exactly like one of my best friends! this has gave rise to some very very disturbing images and i will never see either of them in the same light again. who thought one little photo could have such an effect.

At least my friend has that capability to be nice, but only when she really wants something.

Hold on, this means i think Azure is hot since i think my friend is hot... AHHHH.... collapses in a heap of tortured thoughts

EDIT : WAAAHH I missed my 1000th post! better go back and edit it.

What should we do as regards the proposed poll?

this thread seems to indicate approval for having one

I guess I would say that there have been plenty of suggestions and nominations offered.

Would you say that this thread has now done its job, and that we now ask

staff to take over and condense it down into one or more poll threads?

Or do we keep this suggestion/nomination process going? Are there more people who would like to contribute that we haven't heard from?

Posted

Staff so far thinks it's great, probably need to be several (not a whole lot) categories. Probably start some nomination threads in GD and then whittle the nominations down so we can post a voting poll later. Should we do this now or wait for summer (end of the school year, end of our year?)?

maybe I just hate to see avatars change because I attach the person I read to the image I see and then find it hard to transfer
This may help:

Look at AzurePhoenix. See the intense yet revealing expression she has, hiding enigmatic thoughts? Now imagine that Azure is looking at the Mona Lisa, trying to match her, enigma for enigma.

Now imagine the Mona Lisa's smile falters, just a bit. Her eyes dart to the side, looking for the nearest exit. You know, just in case.

You get the picture....

why not just be Yourself and post a pic of You?

it`s nonsense to get overly concerned about avatars and related trivia, it just detracts from the bits that Really matter, like Science! :)
