I was, and that indeed would be critical.

the ortho, meta, para is not used if it`s a Mono nitrate, a Number coord is used.

and for a Nitrate para ortho etc... only applies on something Without a pre-existing functional group (unless it`s already a Nitro).

so Toluene with it`s already existing Methyl group, para etc... doesn`t apply unless you put another methyl group on at position 4.

then you may say, p-diMethylbenzene (or even 1,4 dimethyl benzene).

thnx :)

I have a small sample of 2,4,6 Trinitromethylbenzene here, and also the same as a Phenol.

there may be a problem as Either of these in a Basic soln become Very unstable!

so when you say Nitro toluene, what do you mean?

mono, di, or Tri?

mono nitro

cool, I`ll try that then, the mono`s easy enough to make.

another question though, you say Alu in NaOH, won`t that just react to make sodium aluminate?

or does it have to be done in any special order?

Reflux nitro aromatic compound( nitro benzene ,nitrotoluene ,nitro bezaldehyde or nitrophenol etc) with 30 ml of 40% NaOH solution & 100 ml Ethanol & add Al pinch by pinch because reaction will be vigrous.Reflux it for 10 hrs.Filtered the mixture while hot& washed the ppt. of sodium aluminate with alcohol.Distill the alcohol & cool it .U will get crystal of Di methyl azobenzene. It was my research project in M.sc

Nice synth! :)

but I think I`ll leave that one, refluxing for 10 hours is Insane, probably wouldn`t be so bad if the Gas was free and I felt comfortable leaving it unattended.

Thanks though :)

ya true but u can use eclectric megnetic stirrer plate & can keep unattended over night.Increase in time does not matter.
