Hi,

 

Could you tell me what is meant by 'as respiratory substrate to release energy for metabolism' in the function part of Carbohydrates? And what is hydrolysis?

 

Couldn't figure it out.

Hydorlysis == hydro (water) lysis (to cut) == a chemical reaction involving water that splits a molecule into two.

 

H₃C-CHH-CHH-CH₃ + H₂O --> H₃C-CHHH + HOCHH-CH₃

 

"as respiratory substrate to release energy for metabolism" : In this context, substrate means a molecule acted upon by an enzyme... so, respiratory enzymes will do stuff to carbohydrates to get their energy.

But, since people can't be eating 100% of the time, we need an energy reserve that can be accessed. Burning fat)AKA lipids) molecules releases more energy than burning glucose or proteins (or nucleic acids)
