Noel_Leon Posted March 27, 2006 Posted March 27, 2006 Hi there, im new here, so be nice Anyway, I have this image which i would love someone to have a look at, as I need to find an answer but so far I am stumped, I've spent a long time looking around on the net and in various books. Thanks very much, oh and sorry if I put this thread in the wrong forum. What I need to know is the chemical structure? Noel
Kedas Posted March 27, 2006 Posted March 27, 2006 What I need to know is the chemical structure?Noel I don't know much about chemistry anymore but isn't that image showing you the chemical structure?
woelen Posted March 27, 2006 Posted March 27, 2006 You are right, this image shows the chemical structure. I do not know the compound. It looks to me like a compound, resembling starch, but with the NH-C(O)-CH3 attached to the rings, I do not know what it really is. Probably it is something starch-like. In order to understand these diagrams, you have to know that C-atoms usually are not drawn. Vertices denote C-atoms. When no other items are connected to a vertex, then only H-atoms are connected. Other groups are drawn explicitly, such as the -OH and =O groups.
Yggdrasil Posted March 27, 2006 Posted March 27, 2006 The molecule is Chitin a polymer of N-acetlyglucosamine. Chitin is a major structural component of many insect exoskeletons and the cell walls of many fungi. Yay for biochemistry.
YT2095 Posted March 28, 2006 Posted March 28, 2006 take a look here: http://www.emc.maricopa.edu/faculty/farabee/biobk/BioBookCHEM2.html nearly half way down at the Polysacharides section, this maybe helpfull?
