aman Posted August 9, 2002 Posted August 9, 2002 Since I'm not on my computer a lot I have the Seti@home software running on my little Dell and I process work units from the Aricibo radio telescope in Puerto Rico. It's run in Berkely with almost 4 million volunteers. I am going to be the one to find ET. Anybody else here doing it?   Just aman :cool2:
fafalone Posted August 9, 2002 Posted August 9, 2002 I'm running it also... but I keep turning it off and on, that combined with the 25 hour per unit time i've only completed 2 :/
blike Posted August 9, 2002 Posted August 9, 2002 I used to on my old machine, whats the URL to download the software again?
aman Posted August 9, 2002 Author Posted August 9, 2002 It's at http://setiathome.ssl.berkeley.edu/ I've cranked 60 WUs with my snail Dell with close to 1200 hours so I'm at about 20 hours each. The best part about it is I joined a group called Skyzdalimit. They are so friendly and have an incredible amount of tech expertise. I've asked some dumb questions and get an answer to any computer problem within a day by several experts. I'd recommend you join this group if you sign up for the WU's. It's worth it just for that. Just aman:cool2: :cool2:
aman Posted August 9, 2002 Author Posted August 9, 2002 If You register with Seti@home you'll get hit with a bunch of e-mails trying to recruit you. Skzdalimit is the best. I'll be right back with the site. It's http://www.skzdalimit.com/seti/ Just aman
Guest CelticSkyhawk Posted August 9, 2002 Posted August 9, 2002 Aman, you're doing a great job as a recruiter, but I have to say he did some advertising for this site on Skzdalimit. I've found a few good threads to read in only a few minutes here.
Guest Lonewolf Posted August 10, 2002 Posted August 10, 2002 Hey Aman, I've processed a few work units but I'm not very serious though.
Sayonara Posted June 15, 2003 Posted June 15, 2003 I got my new computer in October and completely forgot to install SETI@home despite this new machine being powerful enough to really churn out the data. I installed it yesterday and it's munching through those blocks! Yum yum, space signals.
Sayonara Posted June 15, 2003 Posted June 15, 2003 18 hours per work unit while computer in use. Hmmm... wonder how long when it's not doing anything else.
BPHgravity Posted June 15, 2003 Posted June 15, 2003 I have completed 58 Units with just over 5,000 hrs of total CPU time. I only run it as a screen saver.
matthew Posted June 15, 2003 Posted June 15, 2003 I believe its been running on my father's computer non-stop for about two years. I'm rather unsure of how many data packets thats been through and what not, but two years has to count for something. Although, i did have it running myself for quite a while, i just decided i needed that extra bandwith for other things.
Sayonara Posted June 16, 2003 Posted June 16, 2003 It only uses bandwidth when it transmits its results home and requests a new work unit. That's about 1 minute out of a day, on average.
fafalone Posted June 16, 2003 Posted June 16, 2003 It's running on every single computer in the UM comp sci building, completed something like 50,000 WUs.
Giles Posted June 17, 2003 Posted June 17, 2003 I'm running a program checking ligands fits for cancer drug targetting. It doesn't look as nice as seti but i think its more justifiable.
Kedas Posted July 26, 2003 Posted July 26, 2003 I don't run those (@home) programs because I don't know what i'm processing for sure. What I mean is with the appropriated transformations in the source data they could probably let us analyse a lot of different things. Maybe we are even analysing our own (the population) security risk.
