cobra Posted November 4, 2003 Posted November 4, 2003 hey, i need help on stating varibles in "does ice melt faster in air or water?". I'm not sure if this experiment has manipulating and responding variables. if so, can you tell me. thanks.
YT2095 Posted November 4, 2003 Posted November 4, 2003 it melts faster in water, due to surface area adhesion.and cold water as opposed to hot works better too, I know it sounds contra intuitive, but it`s just a fact, use cold water the reasons escape me at the moment, but it`s quite logical when you hear/read it
Sayonara Posted November 5, 2003 Posted November 5, 2003 The manipulating variable is the one that causes the effect, I.E. the temperature of the medium you place the ice in (air or water). The responding variable is the one that responds, I.E. the time it takes the ice to completely melt in that medium.
Glider Posted November 5, 2003 Posted November 5, 2003 I'm not sure temperature can be the correct independent (manipulating) variable here. The stated aim of the experiment is to test whether ice melts faster in water or air. This makes the medium the independent variable. Rate of melting is the dependent (responding) variable. However, to test the hypothesis that 'Ice melts faster in water/air' (1-tailed) or 'there will be a difference in melting times of ice in water or in air' (2-tailed), the temperature of the medium would be a confounding variable (if the two were at different temps), so it would be up to the researcher to control it, ensuring the air and water temps were the same across trials.
Sayonara Posted November 5, 2003 Posted November 5, 2003 That's a bit more sensible. Trust me to use I.E. where I should use E.G. (Although it is for a science fair, not a Nobel prize )
JaKiri Posted November 5, 2003 Posted November 5, 2003 This is no sayonara! He is an experimental government aircraft!
Sayonara Posted November 5, 2003 Posted November 5, 2003 Come minimoose, before we're noticed... ...some more.
Sayonara Posted November 5, 2003 Posted November 5, 2003 Hello friends! I am a perfectly normal human worm baby. You have nothing, absolutely nothing to fear from me. Just pay no attention to me and we’ll get along just fine
JaKiri Posted November 5, 2003 Posted November 5, 2003 ake a good look, children. It will prepare you for your adult lives in our nightmarish corporate system.
Sayonara Posted November 5, 2003 Posted November 5, 2003 Weren't you banished to Foodcourtia? Shouldn't you be...frying something?
JaKiri Posted November 5, 2003 Posted November 5, 2003 But you can't have an invasion without me! I was in operation IMPENDING DOOM 1! Don't you remember?
Sayonara Posted November 5, 2003 Posted November 5, 2003 How could we forget? You started all those fires.
JaKiri Posted November 5, 2003 Posted November 5, 2003 Worse? Or better? (Hold on, why am I doing the zim parts when you're doing the tallest parts? THIS IS ALL WRONG)
Sayonara Posted November 5, 2003 Posted November 5, 2003 You will be sent to a planet so mysterious, no one has even heard of it. And those who have heard of it dare not speak its name! (It's a bit late to swap now)
JaKiri Posted November 5, 2003 Posted November 5, 2003 Enough! I'm gonna sing the doom song now! Doom doom doom doo doom doom
