swacholtz Posted April 22, 2006 Posted April 22, 2006 Hey guys! Do you think it's possible to run windows xp apps on win2k? Have any of you done this before? If you have, then please explain how, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanx in advance
bluesmudge Posted April 22, 2006 Posted April 22, 2006 what sort of apps - you should do win xp is 2k with a funny looking start button
swacholtz Posted April 22, 2006 Author Posted April 22, 2006 Well, I was thinking M$ apps, like messenger live and windows media player 10. You should be able to run them on an older OS right?
Cap'n Refsmmat Posted April 22, 2006 Posted April 22, 2006 You should be able to do it. Most Windows versions have retained compatibility with each other, and so you could probably go back to Windows 98 or so before you start having too many problems.
swacholtz Posted April 22, 2006 Author Posted April 22, 2006 Can you guys try to run windows XP only apps, like media player 10, under the windows 2000 compatibility layer in windows xp? just to see if it works.
5614 Posted April 22, 2006 Posted April 22, 2006 You cannot, it is all greyed out, see here: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v601/5614/wmp.jpg [edit] upon further inspection this is not an access rights issue, it is programed into WMP (windows media player) itself.
swacholtz Posted April 22, 2006 Author Posted April 22, 2006 so i guess you would have to reprogram wmp
bluesmudge Posted April 22, 2006 Posted April 22, 2006 Shame no one pointed out this http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/mp10/readme.aspx#System probably the quickest way to find out would have been to use the microsoft site and find out - personnally i was surprised it won't work, and if it were me i would download it and try it anyway . . . . but thats just me. As i say 2k is XP with a pretty face
Klaynos Posted April 22, 2006 Posted April 22, 2006 2000 isn't security supported any more is it? Under the hood XP and 2k are shockingly close, esspecially when you consider thta XP was released a decent amout of tiem after 2k...

bluesmudge Posted April 23, 2006 Posted April 23, 2006 correct you are - but remember vista will be around soon . . . . ish they it'll be a matter of time before it'll be dropped . . . and it wouldn't surprise me if xp is dropped quickly as well, in an attempt to bump people up to vista
RyanJ Posted April 24, 2006 Posted April 24, 2006 correct you are - but remember vista will be around soon . . . . ish they it'll be a matter of time before it'll be dropped . . . and it wouldn't surprise me if xp is dropped quickly as well, in an attempt to bump people up to vista I'm not so shure about that... I think there is a law that says they must maintain support for xxx amount of time. MS are a money hungry monopoly so your right they wil try to get rid of P as fast as they can once Vista is finished. Cheers, Ryan Jones
