NSX Posted November 9, 2003 Posted November 9, 2003 Like the title says, how do you put math symbols into electronic form? I know how to save the file as a jpg and whatnot, but something like: ie. big sqrt sign, division is centered with left term. :\
Kedas Posted November 9, 2003 Posted November 9, 2003 You can do that in 'word' If I remember correctly.

Kedas Posted November 9, 2003 Posted November 9, 2003 http://www.genetictraining.com/onlinecourse/word2000/word3/miscell.htm#t2 it isn't standaard installed

Sayonara Posted November 9, 2003 Posted November 9, 2003 If it's for presentation on the web you ought to be using MathML. URL: http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-MathML/

URL: http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-MathML/ I downloaded it yesterday, and they sent me the ID or whatnot today. The MS Word one is quite good. I haven't try MathML yet. What's different from it & MS Eq'n Editor?
Sayonara Posted November 10, 2003 Posted November 10, 2003 MS Equation Editor is a proprietary Microsoft product. MathML is an international standard for marking up mathematical equations in a platform-free form.
fafalone Posted November 10, 2003 Posted November 10, 2003 Any ideas about how we could go about implementing that here? I was also looking at mimetex, it's extremely easy to implement but the learning curve for users would be pretty steep.

I'll have a crack @ it on the weekend. fafalone said in post #9 :Any ideas about how we could go about implementing that here? THere's always deductive reasoning to find out how it works ________ ON a sidenote, what program(s) do you guys use to convert from word to pdf?
fafalone Posted November 10, 2003 Posted November 10, 2003 If someone could compile mimetex that would be great. I don't have/know how to use or even what the correct compiler is to use. It should compile into a CGI app...

I haven't looked at the W3 spec in detail yet but it's XML based so it should not be too hard to implement - the most difficult bit will be understanding the freaky W3 semantics in the language specification. Argh. NSX: I use a little program that adds itself to your printer menu as a "printer". When you send a doc to it, it converts it to PDF instead of printing it out. Go to www.tucows.com and search for "PDF" - there are loads of funky free applications
fafalone Posted November 11, 2003 Posted November 11, 2003 I think we're going to implement mimetex and simplfiy the syntax with the addition of some easier vB tags.

Maybe blike can implement the MS Eq'n editor after he modified the msg editing thingy into a MS word layout.
Sayonara Posted August 11, 2004 Posted August 11, 2004 We do use latex. That's what happens when you bump ancient threads
Sayonara Posted August 11, 2004 Posted August 11, 2004 There is a stickied thread in the General Mathematics forum iirc.
