The truth

Is anyone else offended by how recklessly this term is bandied about, particularly by those who want you to accept something largely on faith without evidence?

 

I've heard "the truth" used in a few different contexts lately:

 

1. By IDiots - Harun Yahya offers you an invitation to the truth

 

2. By 9/11 conspiracy theorist nuts - Despite all claims that they want to know "the truth about 9/11", they don't care to rationally examine the evidence. To them, the "truth" is their preconceived view.

 

Is there anyone claiming to know "the truth" who isn't completely bonkers?

Most of it comes from human self-importance. The supporters don't realize how unimportant their opinion is to hard reality, and the preconceptions tend to be based on emotional responses based on how something sounds, and not what it means. Simply, they've never had to figure anything out, so they don't know how to, and generally don't have the reference or foresight to be able to criticize the information they're given. The botched boob jobs who claim to know the truth are just leaches who take advantage of these otherwise well meaning but disarmed people.

The term "truth" is similar to "time". A made-up idea or matter of definition. All i care about is probability.

The word truth is used so recklessly these days, the word 'truth' (especially with a capital T) is a clear warning sign for biased/completely false information.

it's a good word to look out for on the internet especially.

Here's the "honest" truth....... this is one I hate. I guess the truth would be dishonest?

Since we cannot objectively tell what really is "truth" then all use of the term is subjective, and is used to describe what is personally viewed as truth.

 

We generally only use it when we are describing what we feel is a truth that contracts a more widely accepted perception of that facts in the matter. Whether its the truth about VIOXX (since it was assumed safe and turned out not) or the truth about Evolution (assumed to be a scientifically sound theory yet actually isn't when you examine that it blatently contradicts unfalable scripture) it is used in that context to express a "corrective" viewpoint.

 

I don't like seeing it, but at the same time, its not that special, and even when its used to back up horribly unfounded statements it is still the percieved truth of the writer (usually, excluding politics of course).

There are just so many levels of information available these days that people only drill down to a certain level and assume truths based on where they get tired and stop. In almost every case the truth changes based on how much information is actually revealed.
