Oxygen supports combustion, but also is required for combustion. Oxygen in fact is quite an energetic molecule, and so are the molecules in combustible materials.

 

The rearrangement of the oxygen and the combustible molecules to water and carbon dioxide releases the chemical (potential) energy in those molecules as heat.

it may also be usefull to look up REDOX reactions also.

 

a few of the Halogens will support combustion too, without the need for oxygen anywhere :)
