Phi for All Posted September 5, 2006 Posted September 5, 2006 Light has been shed. The Middle East finally humanized. Perhaps "controversial" isn't automatically "interesting". Can I get back to my falafel now?
Dak Posted September 5, 2006 Posted September 5, 2006 I don't recall anyone in this forum dehumanising it. I understand what this thread is trying to do, I just don't think it's necesary. me either. ---------- hmm... i thought kebabs/kebops were of greek origin. were i to base my reasoning on things like this, i would now have a slightly lower oppinion of muslims.

RedAlert Posted September 6, 2006 Posted September 6, 2006 Wow, mooey. You've got me confused. I couldn't figure out a thing by reading your posts. Can you perhaps tell me in point form what the entire point of all those long sentences and posts were? By the way, I do see a point to this thread. It helps us compare our own experiences with the ones we most often hear (the bad ones) through the media. It helps us to really see reality. I think what Rebiu really meant here was not "Middle Eastern" but "Muslim". This confusion between the terms is in fact quite understandable, as it is what we see on the media in general: terrorists = muslims = middle easterners. Oh, another thing, I live in an area quite close to a Jewish neigbourhood, so I know a lot of Jews and I am glad to say am friends with many of them. However, I do notice that about half of them who have visited Israel will tell me about some person or family they knew was affected by a terrorist attack...it's made me wonder if they are telling the truth or just grabbing for some attention. Are they telling the truth? If so, heck, there's a lot of innocent Israelis dying every year, and I totally understand the situation Israel is in. Do any of you know any official numbers about the number of innocent Israelis killed every year?

mooeypoo Posted September 6, 2006 Posted September 6, 2006 I'm sad to say that most Israel actually do know people who were either hurt or killed or were present in a terrorist attack. You also need to understand Israel is a LOT smaller than the united states, so the fact that terrorist attacks are widespread throughout the areas mean that most of the Israelis at least were close to one. Personally, I had four terrorist attacks next to my house; one in a bus, one in a gas station, one in the mall next to my house and one in a shooting that killed a girl that was in my school (I didn't personally know her, but I saw her around). I'll get you links for these attacks if you wish, for info. Also, I lost friends: Two while they were in active duty in Gaza (it's concidered terrorist attack because they weren't killed during combat, but rather talking to a person who just blew himself up), one in a restaurant in Haifa ("Matza" Restaurant), one while waiting for a bus home. Again, I'll get you links for these too, if you want, I just have to run right now for school. I would imagine that some of the people who overreact are the people who don't live there and come for a visit. If you take me for intance, I have quite a "record".. having 4 attacks near me and 5 friends killed is quite the record, and when people hear it they get very upset. I, however, deal with it differently - as I have to, I guess - a lot of the people in Israel "got used" to attacks, which is quite ironic and sad. We hear about a terrorist attack, and as long as it doesn't have "many killed", it's not even on the news for more than three or four minutes. You can't live with the constant hum of violence in your mind. Also, in israel things are quite different in terms of conduct. You get checked before getting into public places (a guard checks into your bag) and soldier activities are large (having to do with the fact the majority of Israel enlist to the military for 2 to 3 years). So "outsiders" get a bit shocked by that. When people who don't live in Israel - but have families there - come by to visit, they often leave with a much stronger reaction than Israelis have. The Israeli media claims that Israelis went "numb", and I wouldn't be surprised.. But yes. There are quite a lot of terrorist attacks. Thankfully, though, we've had some sort of quiet around lately. Knock on wood. ~moo
Sayonara Posted September 6, 2006 Posted September 6, 2006 I think you confuse proof with evidence. When I feel a racist inclination I sometimes think of the blacks I have known who did not fit the inclination and this helps to dissipate an otherwise harmful conception. http://www.blackpeopleloveus.com/
ecoli Posted September 6, 2006 Posted September 6, 2006 http://www.blackpeopleloveus.com/ haha, I've seen that site before, but it's certainly appropriate in this thread.

Rebiu Posted September 6, 2006 Author Posted September 6, 2006 [url']http://www.blackpeopleloveus.com/[/url] This has nothing to do with the content of my quote. It is a desperate attempt by the unfunny to be clever.

ecoli Posted September 6, 2006 Posted September 6, 2006 Does this indicate the Israel’s policies have failed or is it just not possible for things to improve in Israel? Obviously, you didn't read the last sentence on her post. Just as your name is appropriate to the grin on your Avatar. If I knew what you were talking about, I bet this could be considered an ad-hominem. This has nothing to do with the content of my quote. It is a desperate attempt by the unfunny to be clever. The website is much more then that. It's trying to point out how ridiculous it when you are so politically correct, you wind up pointing out ethnic stereotypes and being racist. What your doing has certain overtones of that, though not delibrate satirical way the website does it.
Sayonara Posted September 6, 2006 Posted September 6, 2006 This has nothing to do with the content of my quote. It is a desperate attempt by the unfunny to be clever. I would have thought you'd see the relevance, seeing as it backs you up.
ecoli Posted September 6, 2006 Posted September 6, 2006 ...seeing as it backs you up. I don't see how.
Sayonara Posted September 6, 2006 Posted September 6, 2006 In the context of the section I quoted, not the thread as a whole.
mooeypoo Posted September 6, 2006 Posted September 6, 2006 Does this indicate the Israel’s policies have failed or is it just not possible for things to improve in Israel? None of the above. These are questions none of us can answer "ad hoc", I'd say, no matter how much we try to simplify the situation, or how inclined we are to do so. This was simply an answer to a question asked. I know you have a tendency to ignore questions, but perhaps you might want to read them if you are to understand how people's answers can be relevant to anything. ~moo

It looks to me like Israel has the most powerful military in the region as well as the greatest military force on earth as its ally and supporter. They possess nuclear weapons that few of its adversaries do. They soundly defeated every conventional military attack on their country. Why are they not secure? Why do the other countries in the region continue to War with Israel? Why to people commit suicide to kill Jews? Is Israel innocent?
Rebiu Posted September 6, 2006 Author Posted September 6, 2006 I would have thought you'd see the relevance, seeing as it backs you up.I said nothing about making pretend black friendships to alleviate white guilt. I was speaking of an internal device to counter the strong emotional response to racially oriented stimulus.

It seems a bit antithetical to putting a face on the residents of the Middle East. Back in post #59 you seemed to jump from putting a face on the Middle East to a critique of some of it's members. Should I close this one so you can start another?
