anti-censorship orgs?

Got a call from the "dove foundation" trying to get me to support censorship stuff...really bothered me.

 

Are there any good foundations that have a good reputation for fighting these orgs? I find myself compelled to donate to some group that desires the exact opposite goal of these guys...not sure which ones are actually good though.

 

Any suggestions?

A movie with a bong in it gets a horrible rating, and "btw no sense in finishing school kiddo the world is ending" movies get a free pass?

 

I have nothing against people choosing to rate movies on their site for others who agree with them, but the tone of the phonecall I got is "will you help us change hollywood" and based on the way they rate content, considering they warn when "a gay character" is in a film...this stuff really bothers me.

it does seem to be some pretty backwards morals... but it hardly comes as a suprize that there are organizations like these.

 

It is similiar to book banning.

The most obvious choice would be the ACLU, although their efforts are pretty spread out.

I'm not sure how you equate this with "censorship". Only the government can censor something. This is opt-in stuff. If you don't like it, don't participate. (Or did I misunderstand the site?)

I have nothing against the opt-in aspect of their site, but that quote plus the way the woman that called me talked conveyed a "change everyone else" mentality quite strongly.

You know, I'm about as anti-censorship as you can be. But I like the Dove approach. Rather than crying to the government to come up with yet more legislation to control our behavior, they're operating within the framework of our system and organizing to make themselves relevant. Quite democratic.

 

I'm not getting the oppressive tone from this website at least. Like this quote:

That sounds resonable to me. Promotion of good rather than condeming of what they see bad is a much preferred approach, in my opinion.

 

However, I would be cautious too if they called me with a completely different tone.

 

And I still see a need to promote non-censorship orgs. Dove is great for their cause, so who do we have for ours?

I agree 100% with the quote you grabbed from their site. The tone of the call is what set me off the most, and I as a result didn't go to their site looking for the positive stuff, and was mostly set off by the negative quotes I saw.

 

The negative aspects still put me on edge somewhat, but I would be happy if they stick to their opt-in mentality.

A question you might ask yourself is which is you think is their true view.

 

To recieve your call your name must have fallen onto a list, of whose members they assumed would be more open to the type of call you recieved. (And you might ask yourself what that list was, and how did this group aquire it? Some one you know selling your data.)

 

The other, a website opened for greater viewing by a larger web audience, who might have searched out the site, or stumbled upon it, or came there by your choice of keywords they added to their search list. And might not be thought to be as charged by the issue.

You could go all the way the other way and donate money to the people who want to bring you "the truth." Check out http://www.projectcensored.org/ for example, their 25 top censored news stories of the year are filled with lot of pseudo-scientific stuffs.
