Can someone explain cold fusion

i know quite a bit about chemistry but you might wanna put to put in lamens terms. i understand the basic concept but if i google it i get a definition which isnt really what im looking for. I heard somewhere that some guy used a device the size of a shoebox to do it but that info could be very wrong.
