I was forwarding an email to myself from one account on the Internet to the next, and I noticed the email was able to quickly foward itself.

When a person is forwarding an email, does the server upload the email to another server? In other words, does not the speed of my Internet connection matter but instead the speed of the email server's connection?

It's mostly the email servers. Once the email is uploaded to your email service provider, their servers simply zip it off as fast as possible (and that's usually very fast) to its destination.

OC if you're using webmail, you genrally have the mail already on the webserver and just have to more it to the right place... (shunt it to sendmail or other similar app)

Yes, it's the mail server speed which counts.

For example:

When I send off an email I get taken to a 'sent' screen, I think click to go back to the Inbox. When I send off an email which generates an automated reply, if the automation is quick, then by the time I have gone back to the Inbox (a few short seconds) the response will be there. Whereas with some slower mail servers it will take more like 10 seconds before the response will be received. Different companies, different servers, different speeds.
