ramanan Posted December 19, 2003 Posted December 19, 2003 people say that in a gaseoues molecule particles move swiftly at a rate of 300km per sec. how they determined this. have they used kinetic energy equation to find that?direct me where can i find the information.
NSX Posted December 19, 2003 Posted December 19, 2003 Well, they used the Kinetic Theory model, and did some maths to it. Maxwell came up with the model for the root-mean-square (rms) molecular speed. It describes average molecular speed having a certain average molecular kinetic energy. The equation is: u is the average molecular speed R is the molar gas constant (8.3145 J / mol K). T is the absolute temperature (K) Mm is the Molar mass of the gas (g / mol) Source: General Chemistry 7th. Ebbing, Gammon. p. 214. © 2002 by Houghton Mifflin Company.
YT2095 Posted December 19, 2003 Posted December 19, 2003 300 KM/s? WOW! PETN will only do roughly 22km/s and RDX is about the same. thats some speed it`s got!
ramanan Posted December 22, 2003 Author Posted December 22, 2003 I beg ur pardon YT2095 that figure counts for an hour and not for a second. sorry for dissappointing u.
Guest mac Posted December 22, 2003 Posted December 22, 2003 hai lets go with this chat for the rest of the life...
ramanan Posted December 22, 2003 Author Posted December 22, 2003 Mr.NSX I didn't get the equation. ps try to send me.

You mean it doesn't show up? darn Geocities Well, in text form: u = sqrt (3RT / Mm) u is the average molecular speed R is the molar gas constant (8.3145 J / mol K). T is the absolute temperature (K) Mm is the Molar mass of the gas (g / mol)
Kedas Posted December 23, 2003 Posted December 23, 2003 This will help to have an idea of the speed: http://www.chem.uncc.edu/faculty/murphy/1251/slides/C110/sld030.htm
