the tree Posted November 16, 2006 Posted November 16, 2006 An element is one type of atom, for instance gold, hydrogen, arsenic, caesium. Different types of atom/different elements are defined by the amount of protons in it's nucleus. A combination of different elements/types of atom that have been bonded into a molecule forms a compound. For instance water is a compound of hydrogen and oxygen: one water molecule consists of two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom.
