bekithemba Posted December 30, 2006 Posted December 30, 2006 i want to start making ethanol on a small scale and was wondering how to get it to gel.
Bluenoise Posted December 30, 2006 Posted December 30, 2006 Ummm I'm not quite sure what you mean by getting it to "gel". For what purpose? Well if you freeze it to -80C or colder it gets viscous like a gel. Otherwise you can add glycerol to it to thicken it quite a bit.
bekithemba Posted December 31, 2006 Author Posted December 31, 2006 i am in Zimbabwe, africa and here we have plenty of ethanol at a cheap price but people still use kerosene/paraffin for cooking. i need the ethanol to thicken so i am looking a suitable thickening agent
YT2095 Posted December 31, 2006 Posted December 31, 2006 what do you need to thicken it for? and what percentage is the Alc? I have good reasons for asking.
bekithemba Posted January 3, 2007 Author Posted January 3, 2007 The Ethanol Is Basically 95% Alcohol. When It Is Thickened It Burns Slower.
Invader_Gir Posted January 3, 2007 Posted January 3, 2007 If I remember correctly, you can create a sort of 'gel' by mixing the ethanol with a saturated solution of calcium acetate. Use about 1mL of the Ca(CH3COO)2 solution to 7mL of the ethanol
YT2095 Posted January 4, 2007 Posted January 4, 2007 The Ethanol Is 95% Alcohol in that case use Xanthan gum as the thickening agents, it`ll bind with the water AND the alc (it binds with oils too).
Borek Posted January 4, 2007 Posted January 4, 2007 IMHO what he is looking for is a way of preparing Sterno type gelled fuel: http://zenstoves.net/Sterno.htm Borek -- General Chemistry Software www.pH-meter.info/pH-electrode
Dean Posted January 12, 2007 Posted January 12, 2007 i want to start making ethanol on a small scale and was wondering how to get it to gel. HELLO, I have already been in touch with different sites , however, am still having the problem of making the gel on the small scale for dometic use, using the much excess ethanol produce in uganda, the problem is finding the appropriate gelling (thickening).agent . I look foward for your attention. thank you. Dean.
Dean Posted January 12, 2007 Posted January 12, 2007 ethanol gel fuel most appropriate thickening agent
bekithemba Posted February 17, 2007 Author Posted February 17, 2007 i have hydrated lime and vinegar. now i need to know the ebst method for making calcium acetate
janger Posted February 27, 2007 Posted February 27, 2007 I have done this a couple of times, just for fun. The first time I used crushed eggshell soaked in cleaning vinegar for a couple of weeks, filtered the solution and evaporated it to get the calcium acetate solution. Then I added that to ethanol until it gelled. I think the proportions Invader_Gir posted are correct. I just added enough to the alcohol until it turned into a gel. The second time I reacted pure calcium carbonate with the vinegar to make the acetate. Both times it worked well. And it burnt just as good as the commercial product. Although the eggshell method gave off a bit different smell due to impurities.
solazo Posted March 7, 2007 Posted March 7, 2007 i am actually interested in the production of ethanol for home use too but have not really been able to produce any due to the fact that i hear that a gelling agent is required to temper the volatility, i hear any cellulosic material could be used.
bekithemba Posted July 4, 2007 Author Posted July 4, 2007 i have ethyl cellulose and i want to make gel fuel how do i go about it? anybody?
Inahs Posted July 21, 2008 Posted July 21, 2008 I would also like to know how to make ethanol gel. I have the ethanol, and I have lots of cacti, but I'm not sure how to get the cellulose out of the cacti. Some help/ advise would be greatly appreciated!!
Julius Ahiekpor Posted September 17, 2008 Posted September 17, 2008 Using gel ethanol is one of the ways to reduce Green House Gas emissions. As the name suggests, it is ethanol in gel form. It is a project am working on currently. To gel ethanol, one of several methods used is to mix the ethanol with abt 1% calcium acetate ( egg shell in vinegar). hope it helps
onyangojf Posted October 8, 2008 Posted October 8, 2008 adding calcium acetate derived from egg shells may be fine for experimental projects, but if one has to go commercial a more reliable source is required. Can somenoe help?

hermanntrude Posted July 27, 2009 Posted July 27, 2009 every week or two we get someone asking how to make ethanol or methanol gel. try the search function
