gib65
This is a just-for-fun thread. What would happen if all neurons in your brain started firing all at once and at their maximum capacity? This, of course, probably can't be answered scientifically, so feel free to speculate (and be creative). Example: You'd suddenly achieve enlightenment and have an omniscient understanding of the universe... and you'd have telekinesis.
insane_alien
i'd guess death. you would lose all control over everything, possibly even losing the patterns that keep you alive and make you, you.
swansont
Isn't that, on a smaller scale, what a siezure is?
insane_alien
yeah pretty much. but its a MUCH smaller scale like maybe 15% is a pretty bad seizure.
gib65
What would the experience be like?
Bluenoise
I doubt you'd be capable of experiencing anything. You're brain would likely be 100% non-functional. To put this in context, a cocaine overdose is simular to this but only works on a small fraction of neuro transmitters (Dopamine) and that's not even 100%. It would be like over dosing on as many drugs that releases a neurotransmitter for ever possible neuro transmitter there is, simultaniously... You'd likley have an instand heart attack, and die from that. If it wasn't for your heart going, you're body would likley overheat and fry itself. If that didn't happen and something simular didn't kill you, you'd probably be brain dead following that. Or the most traumatized individual alive. *Edit* I just thought of a great analogy. You know what happens to a computer in an EMP pulse? I think it would be about the same idea for your mind.
Ndi
Wouldn't everyone firing at once also fire those responsible for memory? I'm just doing an analogy here - but if it's anything like an low-force EMP in a computer - just to induce, not fry - it would also cause unwanted writes to memory. I have no idea how much exposure memory needs to be written but if a sustained 100% burst would be achieved you'd probably lose all memory in addition to the ability to have thoughts. bascule
What would happen if all neurons in your brain started firing all at once and at their maximum capacity? I don't know about the "maximum capacity" bit, but what you're describing sounds like the effects of ingesting bicuculline. The result is, as swasont said, a seizure. jackson33
since your brain controls every body function a mess would be likely. in death your brain is said to light up pretty good. as for additional knowledge, this could only be if it had been introduced. if the brain has capacity beyond our understanding, i guess it would show up. some people do think they knew of a passing, before being told. quite a few in fact...
