Bibinou Posted January 14, 2007 Posted January 14, 2007 Hello, how can we make these reactions? thank you
ecoli Posted January 15, 2007 Posted January 15, 2007 NaNH2 an aldehyde and H+, perhaps? Though, you'd have to hydrogenate the triple bond, and I'm not sure if you're allowed to use that many steps.
John Cuthber Posted January 16, 2007 Posted January 16, 2007 ecoli, What aldehyde and what triple bond? The classic method for the first part, IIRC, is reduction by magnesium. Look for stuff about pinacol. I'm not sure abouty the second; perhaps dehydration to the epoxide then reduction?
ecoli Posted January 16, 2007 Posted January 16, 2007 ecoli, What aldehyde and what triple bond? carbon forming bonds in a reaction with a ketone and a triple bond. The ketone turns into an alcohol if you add H+. Though, the pinacol would make more sense. edit: never mind, I can't count carbon - carbon bonds. That wouldn't work.
Bluenoise Posted January 16, 2007 Posted January 16, 2007 I think the first one is something simular to an aldol condensation. Actually I'm nearly 100% positive it's related in some manner. I just can tell you cuz I left all my notes in another city and the internet sucks for this... Maybe in a couple weeks when I pick them up sorry....
John Cuthber Posted January 18, 2007 Posted January 18, 2007 "I think the first one is something simular to an aldol condensation. Actually I'm nearly 100% positive it's related in some manner." I'm pretty certain that it's not (other than that it forma a carbon carbon bond). I also wonder if you actually looked into the chemistry of pinacol. Even a google search on the word might have helped, and I think the 'net's really quite good at that sort of thing.
