aommaster Posted January 11, 2004 Posted January 11, 2004 Hi guys, any news on the mars exploration of the Beagle II, Spirit or Oppurtunity? Well, post here! Any news that you have heard, rumours, anything, I need to know. MY newspaper doesn't have lots of info on this sort of stuff, so i thought that it would be best to keep it here! Thanx guys
blike Posted January 11, 2004 Posted January 11, 2004 Last I heard there was a piece of the "airbag" that was blocking the downramp, so they were going to delay 3 days while they lifted the pedals and retracted the airbag completely. Space.com is a very good source for latest mars info. Also might want to check out NASA and JPL's pages. Space.com is reporting that everything is good to go for the rover to move off the pad on tuesday night. It'll be interesting to see what it finds! http://www.space.com/missionlaunches/spirit_update_040110.html
aommaster Posted January 11, 2004 Author Posted January 11, 2004 Yeah. ME too! WHERE ON MARS IS THE BEAGLE 2. What a lousy spacecraft!
Cap'n Refsmmat Posted January 11, 2004 Posted January 11, 2004 Shouldn't this be in the News section?
aommaster Posted January 12, 2004 Author Posted January 12, 2004 yeah. But this is just for ANY information, usually, the news section only has the important stuff! This one is just for tiny litle things that people don't take account of!
Cap'n Refsmmat Posted January 13, 2004 Posted January 13, 2004 And, of course, there are Mars-related threads in the News section, so this is redundant. Anyway, I 'spose we should talk about Mars. I hear an airbag is blocking the ramp for the rover.
aommaster Posted January 14, 2004 Author Posted January 14, 2004 yeah. That was quite a long time ago. I also heard that there would be a mission somewhere near 24 jan or something. What is that anyways?
blike Posted January 14, 2004 Posted January 14, 2004 Overnight, the golfcart-sized rover cut the final cord tying it to the landing platform that it came in on 10 days ago, then backed up about 10 inches (25 centimeters) and turned 45 degrees. These were the first maneuvers planned in preparation for having Spirit roll 10 feet (3 meters) down a ramp onto the Martian surface on Wednesday night or early Thursday morning. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/3855168/ Wooohooo. Almost time to leave the pad
Cap'n Refsmmat Posted January 14, 2004 Posted January 14, 2004 And then find a Martian with a ray gun hiding behind a rock
fafalone Posted January 15, 2004 Posted January 15, 2004 Anyone familiar with what measures were taking to ensure bacteria from earth didn't get onto the surface of mars from the various probes that have landed on it?
aommaster Posted January 15, 2004 Author Posted January 15, 2004 hmmm.... good question. yeah, and what IF the bacteria landed on mars, wouldn't they have died anyway?
YT2095 Posted January 15, 2004 Posted January 15, 2004 cool, the Explorer has left it`s pad and traveled 10 feet, there were concerns over it not being able to leave as planned due to an air bag that was obstructing the "off ramp", but despite fears, the test mission was a 100% sucess, and 2 excellent photos were taken, one forwards, and one looking back at it base platform. Nice work NASA
aommaster Posted January 15, 2004 Author Posted January 15, 2004 Yeah. Now let's wait and see what they find. I also heard that the ramp that was blocked by the airbag was the ramp where the rover would have to go by. Now they changed plans to take a more DANGEROUS route. COOL!!!!
YT2095 Posted January 15, 2004 Posted January 15, 2004 yeah, I watched it Live this morning from the Pasadena control center, the pics were Great!
aommaster Posted January 15, 2004 Author Posted January 15, 2004 LUCKY MAN! Nice, maybe u can give us some feedback!
YT2095 Posted January 15, 2004 Posted January 15, 2004 It was a satelite link to Sky News, I don`t know if they cover your area? they might, but I`m sure CNN or Fox will be coving it just the same, it`ll certainly make it to your normal evening news though
aommaster Posted January 15, 2004 Author Posted January 15, 2004 yeah. I haven't watching the news lately, i only read the newspapers. *Sigh....*
Radical Edward Posted January 15, 2004 Posted January 15, 2004 they're a bit slow aren't they? faf would probably be at cydonia by now.

I think pretty much all landers are sterilised now aren't they? They seem to take great care to make sure that non-landers go somewhere safe, like bashing them into jupiter and so on.

They have a guy called the Planetary Protection Officer (really!) He takes swabs of the lander to make sure there aren't too many bacteria on the spacecraft. But wouldn't they all die in a vacuum with no water (space)?
YT2095 Posted January 16, 2004 Posted January 16, 2004 alot of them would sure, but spores would make the trip quite easily
