How does molecular techniques applied to histopathology?

I am a biomedical undergraduate student and I gotta write an essay on "Application of molecular techniques on histopathology". I'm not very familiar with molecular techniques because I didn't take any courses related to molecular biology. Can anyone of you give me some ideas about what molecular techniques are? and what kind of molecular techniques can be applied to histopathological analysis? I would be very thankful if some1 can give me some reference related to this topic.
