Martin
Friday I get my crow, and I go on leave. I will probably be incommunicado until then, though. Congratulations! I guess "crow" is an eagle emblem signifying that you are qualified as a nuclear ship's power engineer. Please correct me if I'm wrong. for civilian stationary power I like wind and other renewable technologies, so I am certainly no nuclear enthusiast, but I think it is a really interesting and valuable branch of knowledge---in fact learned some nuclear engineering back in 1970s in connection with a National Academy study that I had to help with. Thorough competence in nuclear engineering is excellent mental discipline and having mastered it will help you master other science and technology further down the line. So this is real cause for celebration. And I guess you are making whoopee about just being through with it too!
ydoaPs
It means I'm going to become a Petty Officer. Basically, I get a raise and more responsibility. I go from E-3 to E-4. I took my comprehensive exam today and got a 3.52 on a 4.0 scale. My overall "A" school grade was 3.42.

Martin
It's great to hear about all this good stuff----successful completion of the course, promotion, raise, leave... I can't keep the ranks straight, can't tell the difference between a midshipman and a petty officer---dont try to explain I'll never get navy ranks. but the main thing to me is, I suspect, that now you can run a nuclear reactor knowledgeably and efficiently. (Or if not yet at that level, what's next?)
insane_alien
i'm still not comfortable with yourdad being within 100 miles of anything with the word 'nuclear' in its name.
