Meerschaum Posted January 20, 2004 Posted January 20, 2004 is it possible to engineer mushrooms to grow any form of chemical? like in the future with genetic engineering and stuff :lame: :lame: :lame: /me chews bubblegum
fafalone Posted January 20, 2004 Posted January 20, 2004 In principle you could grow them from amino acids, since thats how life originated... that might take a while tho
Cookie Posted January 20, 2004 Posted January 20, 2004 Well, they engineer yeast (a fungus) to produce all kinds of proteins & secondary metabolites. No reason to think that they couldn't do the same with mushrooms (also fungi), given the appropriate genetic information and enough info about the biochemical pathway being introduced. Things get a little tricky if you have to introduce multiple genes, and sometimes it's hard to predict what the foreign metabolite will do to the host that's expressing it, but theoretically, it's possible.
