Cap'n Refsmmat Posted April 5, 2007 Posted April 5, 2007 Hello everybody. We're planning to move SFN to a new, shinier server tomorrow (Thursday) sometime in the afternoon/evening GMT. Downtime should last anywhere from an hour to a day, depending on the time it takes for DNS providers to realize that SFN has moved. Average should be around three hours, I think. The new server should be faster and, most importantly, more reliable. We've made sure everything on it is up-to-date and properly configured, so hopefully things will work when we make the move. I'll try to warn you if we have to postpone the move for any reason. Thanks for the patience. Hopefully we won't have to suffer through any more downtime after this.
JohnF Posted April 5, 2007 Posted April 5, 2007 What's the IP address of the new server? Just in case someone wants to put an entry in their hosts file whilst DNS resolves.
insane_alien Posted April 5, 2007 Posted April 5, 2007 finally, we get some advanced warning so we can download some of the older pages to get out SFN fix while the servers down instead of having to go cold turkey.
Dave Posted April 5, 2007 Posted April 5, 2007 What's the IP address of the new server? Just in case someone wants to put an entry in their hosts file whilst DNS resolves. We'll post the IP address in the notice we put up when the boards on this server are shut down. finally, we get some advanced warning so we can download some of the older pages to get out SFN fix while the servers down instead of having to go cold turkey. Yeah, I'm sorry for all of that other downtime. The new setup seems a lot more reliable, and I've certainly tried to make it fairly robust.
Dave Posted April 5, 2007 Posted April 5, 2007 So you're all aware: server will be going down in about 15-20 minutes.
Dave Posted April 5, 2007 Posted April 5, 2007 The server is back up with an updated version of the new style. Please give us feedback on speed and the style in the style thread. Thanks!
blike Posted April 5, 2007 Posted April 5, 2007 Dave's link above is bored, here's the corrected one: http://scienceforums.net/forum/showthread.php?t=25742
Dak Posted April 6, 2007 Posted April 6, 2007 you might wanna either change the 'forum' folder to 'forums', or set 'forums' up as a synonym or something... my SFN bookmark (http://www.scienceforums.net/forums) gives a 404, and old posts like this that link to other posts/threads are borked, 'cos they refer to 'forums'.
Cap'n Refsmmat Posted April 6, 2007 Author Posted April 6, 2007 That bookmark hasn't been valid since September 2006. But as for the old posts, yes, we can fix those links with a rewrite rule in lighty. I'll ask dave about it.
Dak Posted April 6, 2007 Posted April 6, 2007 hmm... worked for me up untill the recent server change...
Dave Posted April 6, 2007 Posted April 6, 2007 I haven't added the redirect rules for the new server yet. I'll put it on the list of things to do.
