JohnF Posted April 10, 2007 Posted April 10, 2007 I understand how looking at a bright light can help bring a sneeze on, but how does slapping your thigh stop a sneeze?
carol Posted April 10, 2007 Posted April 10, 2007 that's new. I didn't know slapping one's thigh can stop sneezing:)
JohnF Posted April 10, 2007 Author Posted April 10, 2007 It's something you can try though Carol. The problem is remembering to do it just before you sneeze and trying not to look a fool in public
Phi for All Posted April 10, 2007 Posted April 10, 2007 I understand how looking at a bright light can help bring a sneeze on, but how does slapping your thigh stop a sneeze?I'm from Colorado and in the old west "slapping thigh" meant you're going for your gun. Maybe it scares the sneeze out of you, Probably works for hiccups too. Seriously, I've never heard of this and I can't imagine the bodily mechanism. Would any sharp pain do the same thing or does it have to be your thigh? Perhaps this is a form of acupressure?
insane_alien Posted April 10, 2007 Posted April 10, 2007 as a hayfever sufferer i can definitively say that slapping your thigh(or any other part of your body) does NOT stop a sneeze.
JohnF Posted April 10, 2007 Author Posted April 10, 2007 as a hayfever sufferer i can definitively say that slapping your thigh(or any other part of your body) does NOT stop a sneeze. Well it stops my sneezes, when I remember to do it. This is something I heard once, don't remember where but it does work for me. So I now know it doesn't work for everyone, although I assumed it did. Are you sore now?
insane_alien Posted April 10, 2007 Posted April 10, 2007 no, my hayfever doesn't kick in till late may through to early august. i won't be sneezing much until then.
mytwocents Posted April 12, 2007 Posted April 12, 2007 I know exactly how you feel...i'm doing okay for now but once the end of April comes i'll be miserable. Sneezing, watering/itchy eyes. At least this year I'm not expecting, last year I was pregnant so i couldn't take very much and my allergies were the worst they've ever been. People who knew what I was going through just chuckled when they looked at me with my flame-red eyes and runny nose...i looked pretty pitiful.
