bascule Posted May 31, 2007 Posted May 31, 2007 Hmm, Kyoto deja vu: http://edition.cnn.com/2007/POLITICS/05/31/bush.climate.ap/ I guess this is a step in the right direction, but I wish there were more of a focus of addressing climate change in a multitude of different ways, rather than just emissions limits
Phi for All Posted May 31, 2007 Posted May 31, 2007 I guess this is a step in the right direction....I think it's more of an "urge" in a vague direction that can later be either focused, ignored or plausibly denied.
ecoli Posted May 31, 2007 Posted May 31, 2007 That's what I got... to me it sounds like he's trying to appease the environmentalists without saying very much of anything. "Mr Bush will oppose demands for the US to cut emissions and join a global carbon trading system." http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/6708995.stm So, what is he promising that other nations will cut emissions?
bob000555 Posted May 31, 2007 Posted May 31, 2007 <sarcasm>Hmmm limiting emissions….YES thats a good idiea, Bush is a genius how did he ever think of that!</sarcasm> More seriously didn’t Bush pull us out of the Kyoto Protocol at the start of his presidency because he thought there was no global warming it was just god waving his hand…score one “crazy liberals”.
Pangloss Posted May 31, 2007 Posted May 31, 2007 He didn't pull out of Kyoto, it was voted down in the Senate during the Clinton administration by every single Democrat and every single Republican. Bush's contribution was to "fail" to demand domestic political support for a very bad idea that, coincidentally, could not have passed if it was dressed up in garters and a very short skirt. That's what I got... to me it sounds like he's trying to appease the environmentalists without saying very much of anything. Politically speaking, he's not so much interested in "environmentalists" as he is moderate voters. This falls under the heading of laying groundwork for the 2008 Republican candidates (something in very short supply at the moment).
ParanoiA Posted May 31, 2007 Posted May 31, 2007 Politically speaking, he's not so much interested in "environmentalists" as he is moderate voters. No kidding. Global warming is now a gimme position. Everybody's going to claim they're on board to some capacity to mark it off of their checklist. Kind of like "the children" ...you have to be for something if it's for "the children".
PhDP Posted June 1, 2007 Posted June 1, 2007 Let's just rejoice in the fact that the pression is so high, even Bush has to change the tone. If the politicians could listen to the groups of expert for a change, much more would be done to fight AGW.
