Skye Posted February 9, 2004 Posted February 9, 2004 It occurs in parietal cells that line the stomach. CO2 and H2O react, aided by a catalytic enzyme, to produce carbonic acid (HCO3) and H+ ions. A membrane protein pumps H+ ions out of the cells and pumps K+ ions in. The K+ ions are able to flow back out of the cell through potassium channels. Cl ions pass out of the cells through ion channels also to produce HCl with the H+ ions pumped out. Cl ions are pumped into the cell from the blood by another membrane protein, which also pumps out the excess carbonic acid.
YT2095 Posted February 9, 2004 Posted February 9, 2004 Whoa! cool answer! secondary question though (still rellated) when a bone is healing, or isn`t used, there are some cells in the blood that secrete HCL to effectively etch the excess bone away (it happens to astronaughts too). what proccess do they use?

These are osteoclasts. They eat away at the broken surfaces of the bone and dispose of splinters, in effect preparing the way for osteoblasts to lay down new bone in the fibrin and collogen matrix caused by the inflammation around the fracture (bone healing is an inflammatory process).
