Icemelt Posted August 14, 2007 Posted August 14, 2007 Here's an interesting little chart I stumbled on Looks like the guys camped out demonstrating at the airports should be hanging around the forests and coal / gas fired power stations instead !
timo Posted August 15, 2007 Posted August 15, 2007 Both better than sitting in front of a computer in your air-conditioned house, it seems. Especially if you go there by bike. It would (for several reasons) be nice having a link to where you found the chart, though.
bascule Posted August 15, 2007 Posted August 15, 2007 What's the source on that graph? Here's another: This is from: Marland, G., T.A. Boden, and R. J. Andres (2003). "Global, Regional, and National CO2 Emissions" in Trends: A Compendium of Data on Global Change. Oak Ridge, Tenn., U.S.A.: Carbon Dioxide Information Analysis Center, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, U.S. Department of Energy.
MangoChutney Posted August 15, 2007 Posted August 15, 2007 What's the source on that graph? Icemelt's chart is from the IPCC AR4 document The UK government used this type of information to impose additional taxes on air travellers The camp at Heathrow includes protestors from other countries. I'm pretty sure they didn't get to Heathrow on their bicycles What would be interesting is natural CO2 emissions were overlaid, so we could see exactly where all the CO2 was coming from and how it compared with man made emissions
John Cuthber Posted August 15, 2007 Posted August 15, 2007 "What would be interesting is natural CO2 emissions were overlaid, so we could see exactly where all the CO2 was coming from and how it compared with man made emissions" Well, the CO2 levels used to be constant at about 300 ppm, now they are rising. It's fair to assume that the difference is due to mankind. If that's true then the net contribution from natural sources is nil. Pointing out that the fraction of CO2 emisions from air transport is fairly small is one thing. Recognising that it is due to the actions of a relatively small number of people is another.
MangoChutney Posted August 15, 2007 Posted August 15, 2007 "What would be interesting is natural CO2 emissions were overlaid, so we could see exactly where all the CO2 was coming from and how it compared with man made emissions"Well, the CO2 levels used to be constant at about 300 ppm, now they are rising. Any idea how that translates to Gt CO2 used in the chart?
1veedo Posted August 15, 2007 Posted August 15, 2007 Natural CO2 emissions are absorbed by climate sinks. Climate sinks are basically negative feedback systems. Over half of all anthropogenic CO2 emissions are being absorbed by the same sinks. Btw bascule your graph only shows fossil fuel CO2 which doesn't represent net anthropogenic CO2 production.
Icemelt Posted August 16, 2007 Author Posted August 16, 2007 What's the source on that graph? My apologies for the omission see: http://www.mnp.nl/ipcc/pages_media/FAR4docs/chapters/CH1_Introduction.pdf Chapter 1, Page 13 Better be quick, since I suspect this unacceptable data will be supressed shortly ! (Just a passing comment to antagonize the easily inflamed) (However somebody please prove me wrong by posting a live link to this chart in six months)
