DallasB Posted September 21, 2007 Posted September 21, 2007 Hello, I have 3 ponds on my land so I have a lot of water to use. I want to make a workable h2o steam power generator. I have a 4,000 sf shop on my land where we make all kinds of stuff here. I would now like to make a SG with an out put to supply my shop and home. It will be fuel by oil, here is a clip that I been looking at..........please make it real, no jokes, I want to make it work. I having a hard time finding a generator.... http://www.livevideo.com/video/40FFEF6E66E34B6B93D1ECD283FA6C63/steam-pump-ii.aspx http://www.livevideo.com/video/9B5B41EC9DD84C0CB1B30E86290A9330/steam-babington-vii.aspx http://www.livevideo.com/video/9B5B41EC9DD84C0CB1B30E86290A9330/steam-babington-vii.aspx
YT2095 Posted September 21, 2007 Posted September 21, 2007 erm... what can I say... LOL! I love it! you will need some gearing though to up the RPMs to drive a genny, and that vid looked very Lossy in way of energy In to energy Out ratio, but! there`s no reason at all you can`t make this work! My hat`s off to you Sir!
insane_alien Posted September 21, 2007 Posted September 21, 2007 to make a steam generator: 1/Pressure Vessel(Boiler) 2/flame. make an oil burner that will heat the tank. 3/for the generator bit you will need a piston. preferably driving a reasonable sized flywheel. i'm sure it can't be that hard to find an alternator somewhere. just hook it up. and if you need 60Hz you'll need to make a govenor and gearing mechanism to keep the alternator at 3600RPM
YT2095 Posted September 21, 2007 Posted September 21, 2007 a centrifugal clutch is the easiest and best sort of govenor to use.
insane_alien Posted September 21, 2007 Posted September 21, 2007 i was thinking this sort http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Centrifugal_governor it would keep it at a constant speed rather than just giving an upper bound.
YT2095 Posted September 21, 2007 Posted September 21, 2007 erm, Dude a centrifugal clutch can do either it all depends Where you put the clutch plates
Rocket Man Posted September 26, 2007 Posted September 26, 2007 you ought to look at marine engines for the powerhouse. you can get sizable steam engines built for decent revs, a couple of automotive alternators linked to a solar power inverter would allow you to hook back into the grid and make a bit of profit on the excess power (you'd also appreciate the power during down time). as for generating steam, look at pre-volatilising kerosene stoves to get some inspiration for the burner. and research old locomotives for boiler types. (you'll want a superheater)
