gib65 Posted September 28, 2007 Posted September 28, 2007 I'm looking for a diagram that shows the shapes of different orbitals along with what element they correspond to. I've found lots of pictures of orbitals online but very few that label the type of atom (element) they're associated with. Any links would be greatly appreciated.
swansont Posted September 28, 2007 Posted September 28, 2007 The orbitals are associated with all elements. The specific values for e.g. energy, and which are occupied would be element-specific, but every element has the s orbitals, the p orbitals, etc.

Hydrogen, I'm assuming, has its s-orbital filled, and then somewhere higher up the periodic table (helium? lithium?) the p-orbital gets filled.
Cap'n Refsmmat Posted September 28, 2007 Posted September 28, 2007 Hydrogen and helium are both s. In general, groups 1 and 2 have s-orbitals, 3-12 d-orbitals, and 13-18 p-orbitals. The lanthanide and actinide series have f-orbitals. This means that, for example, boron has two s-orbitals full (from periods 1 and two) and 1 electron in a p-orbital.
iNow Posted September 28, 2007 Posted September 28, 2007 I'm looking for a diagram that shows the shapes of different orbitals along with what element they correspond to. Maybe something like this (all three pages are related, but cover different aspects)... http://www.uwgb.edu/dutchs/PETROLGY/WhatAtomsLookLike.HTM http://www.uwgb.edu/dutchs/PETROLGY/WhatElmsLookLike.HTM http://www.uwgb.edu/dutchs/PETROLGY/WhatRELookLike.HTM
YT2095 Posted September 28, 2007 Posted September 28, 2007 try this: http://www.webelements.com/ just click on the element and all will be shown to you, Enjoy
Royston Posted September 28, 2007 Posted September 28, 2007 There are plenty of links here to...http://www.scienceforums.net/forum/showthread.php?t=11288
